William & Henry Wide Plank Floors LLC.

William & Henry Wide Plank Floors LLC. William & Henry handcrafts traditional solid and engineered wide plank floors from the finest old growth pines, hardwoods, and reclaimed woods. There can’t be.

For more than 40 years, Don Carlisle has had a passion for wood. It all began when he was a young boy working alongside his father in New Hampshire, handcrafting wide plank flooring for Carlisle Restoration Lumber, the family business his parents had started in 1972. Don Carlisle, Peter Switzer, and the entire William & Henry team have a passion for wood and sharing that passion with each customer

. They work with one customer at a time, getting to know each family, and crafting every floor by hand. Named for Don's son William Henry, William & Henry Wide Plank Floors reflects the company's commitment to creating a personal relationship with each homeowner, and with the sawmill owners and craftsmen who make the floors. There will be no other floor like the one William & Henry makes for you. The knots, the color, the sap, the grain—all are affected by the earth in which a tree grows. Each floor is one of a kind, as special as the family who lives on it.

Fun project in CA matching up to a random width heart pine floor Don originally made 20+ years ago. These homeowners were great, and opted not to stain to match the much darker patina of their existing planks . . . rather we worked together to pick a complimentary finish . . . allowing their new floor to gracefully age into the patina of their existing. There is a lot of trust required to do this together from across the country, but the results speak for themselves, and this floor will significantly darken over time.

This is a great fiber to make floors from and it’s been fun to see an increased interest in these traditional pine floors. Thanks for looking!

Here are some photos of solid rift sawn Red Oak installed over radiant heat. This lumber was all sourced from one family sawmill in Vermont who accumulated it over time in wide random widths. Scroll right if you wish to see how this order progressed from selecting the raw lumber, milling and installation.

This specific cut of Red Oak has an extremely quiet and consistent grain. For clients considering rift White Oak that are sensitive to what percentage of medullary rays or “figuring” their lumber will visually contain . . . rift sawn red is a worthy alternative. Thanks for looking!

All 9”’ Character Black Walnut. We finished this floor in 2021 and love how the patina has developed and brightened with age. Commercial projects have their own unique set of challenges, but can also be very rewarding . . . especially when you receive photos such as these.

These images show a handsome solid/select Northern Red Oak floor we made for a builder’s summer cottage along Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This material was all harvested in Vermont and shows what’s possible when using a fiber that doesn’t have the demand that White Oak currently has. The majority of this floor was 8-16’ long after milling and it has a beautiful plain-sawn grain. Scroll through to see photos from milling and selecting this specific batch of lumber this past December. This client opted for all 7” face widths which look great in their interior. We could have also created random widths between 7-11” but these folks preferred the uniformity of all one width. If you plan to finish your Oak floor with anything other than a clear or white wash look . . . select Red Oak is a great alternative to White and offers significant savings. It’s also a fun way to utilize this beautiful resource we have here in northern New England, and support our local lumber partners.

Our 12” Select Hickory and custom made waterfall stair treads make for quite the transformation in this California home overlooking the Bay. We hand select our hickory to contain a majority of heartwood even after slicing our 1/4” wear layers, which creates the more consistent milk chocolate tone our Hickory clients seek out. To that end all of this hickory lumber was sourced from one small sawmill in NY state to ensure our clients vision was delivered.

The stairs were made from 1” thick engineered stock by utilizing a fun lock miter to help aid stability and longevity. Additionally all flooring and treads were custom finished by W&H prior to delivery.

Overall this project is a great example of the custom nature of our business, and how no two clients or projects are ever the same. Cheers!

Such a fun project in Colorado Springs showing our 7” engineered heart pine. We hand-finished this one in the barn with Invisible Protect. . . man what a beauty and what an individual batch of lumber. The lengths of this floor turned out to be mostly 10-16’ long. Thanks for looking.
