A phenomenal Gul-I-Gul rug, currently up on our wall.
Gul-I-Gul is plural for ‘gul,’ a Persian word meaning flower or rose. They are elaborately decorated medallions, often octagonal in shape, with a calming, all over symmetry.

Aside from the lustrous, high elevation hand-spun wool, it’s the mastery and artistry of the dyer that brings out the extraordinary hues of madder root red, ranging from vibrant rusty orange to deep crimson.

A beautiful modern rendition of one of the most recognizable and symbolic Navajo rug designs: the Storm Pattern. This design is a mighty powerful one and embodies themes of harmony, protection and the raw power of nature.

The central rectangle points to the home as a sacred place, offering protection and stability. The zig zag lightning motifs represent nature’s force with energy, movement and transformation. The corner symbols are the Four Sacred Mountains of the Navajo tradition, defining their homeland’s boundaries.

The quiet strength of this rug is a joy to have around.
