It started with family creativity

My Mother and my Aunt spent many years traveling to craft shows. I helped box and carry many, many pounds of items they had created. Out to the car, into the craft show, back to the car and finally back into the house. Then, we would start the process again. I grew up sewing on Mom’s old Singer sewing machine. I learned how to tear hand-me-down clothing apart and re-make it into something new. We started making stuffed animals by cutting up fuzzy blankets and old furry coats.

My Aunt also had a vegetable garden, so she was carrying all of her produce back and forth. She purchased a location with a large parking lot for her produce, and a building that served as a shop for our sewing and crafting. I contacted people to bring in handmade items on consignment. Since it was on a corner lot, we named this business ‘Corner Cupboard’. Eventually, she purchased a building in New Auburn, WI. The business name ‘Corner Cupboard’ stayed with us during the move, even though we no longer were located on a corner lot. After getting the business running, I decided to get a full time job, doing my crafts as a sideline again. So, I left my dream and got a regular paycheck job.

When my husband became ill in 2013, I looked through my boxes of stored craft supplies, and got my crochet hooks and yarn out. I sat beside his bed and started making hats and scarves. People who stopped at his room to visit, would purchase them as fast as I could make them. When he came home, I was his full time caregiver, and I decided to retire from my full time job in order to care for him. As he eventually became more independent, it freed me to do more of my crafts, and my dream of a craft shop again surfaced. My daughter helped me attend one craft show, and carrying all the boxes, setting up the displays, and then tearing it all down again, convinced both of us that we didn’t want to do that.

When a building became available in New Auburn, WI, I did some serious praying, and decided to rent it. I was able to purchase some Amish made quilts and baskets for re-sale, and I contacted people in this area who were taking items to local craft shows, to see if they would be interested in consigning their handcrafts. Most of the items in our shop are locally made, there is truly a lot of talent around here! Since I love to bake, we also have a coffee corner where anyone is welcome to come and sit for a while to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea along with a fresh, homemade cookie or bar.
