Nice story. Here's to a Happy New Year!
“Out with the old…”
The three cats peered over at the old, rusty door.
“YOU NITWIT, Patch!” wailed Pip. “You’ve slammed the door shut and now we can’t get back in!”
“Everything we’ve ever known is locked up in there,” said Marmalade, feeling rather cross at Patch, for he was always causing trouble. “Why would you do that?” The two cats turned and leered at the black and white cat. Patch took a deep breath and spoke.
“Marmalade. Pip. That there is the door to our past. Behind it holds the hurt and pain we’ve all felt over the years. The cruel words, the rejection, the mistakes; we’ve been hanging on to them for far too long, so I decided it was high time we let go and made a fresh start. I’ve already said goodbye from us all and closed the door for good.”
The two cats' mouths fell open and gasped.
“You’re right!” shrieked Marmalade. “To be honest, I’ve wanted to do that for a long time, but I never had the courage! Well done you brave cat!”
“And me!” said Pip, and then paused. “But, it hasn’t all been bad? What about the good stuff Patch, are they gone forever too?”
Patch smiled. Behind him on the step was a large trunk. “No, they’re coming with us,” smiled Patch, jabbing the suitcase with his paw. “I’ve thought of everything. Now come on, a new door awaits. I’ve got the key.”
Patch jumped down from the garden step and smiled. For the first time, he felt pleased with himself. He’d finally got something right. Now what a change that made!
As we draw a close on another year, let’s make a decision to shut the door on the past and never look back. March forward with excitement, anticipation and confidence. Try something new; make a change. Only you can turn that key. Here’s to 2025 and all the blessings and hope that awaits us!
