🦌 This is completely normal behavior for a deer fawn, and human intervention is unnecessary.

Fawns are born nearly scentless so predators cannot find them easily. They also have spots that serve as camouflage and are able to stand soon after being born, but as a protective tactic will remain hidden.

Renovations Underway at Darke Wildlife Area Ponds 🚧
📍 GREENVILLE, Ohio – All seven ponds at Darke Wildlife Area in Darke County will undergo vegetation management on their dams and trails. The project is expected to be concluded by the end of June 2026. To ensure public safety and to allow crews to work efficiently, some rotating closures to the wildlife area’s parking lots are expected, which could limit fishing opportunities.

In preparation for the dam repairs, dense woody vegetation and trees will be removed from the dams and trails widened. This work will affect the two ponds located near the New Harrison-Bradford Rd. parking lot. These improvements will extend the life of the nearly 60-year-old structures. An additional project to repair two wetland dikes near the New Harrison-Bradford Rd. parking lot is also planned for this spring.

Darke Wildlife Area was purchased by the state beginning in 1960. Construction of the current pond system was initiated soon afterwards. The area includes a diverse mix of open land, woodland, and early successional wildlife habitat that has provided generations of outdoor enthusiasts with quality hunting, fishing, and birding opportunities.

🦃 NEWS: Ohio’s wild turkey hunters bagged 15,887 birds during the spring 2026 season which concluded on Sunday, May 31. The total statewide harvest represents all turkeys checked from April 18 to May 31, including the 2,058 birds taken during youth-only hunting.

🗓️ During the 2025 spring season, the total number of turkeys checked was 16,014. The three-year average for the spring season (2023, 2024, and 2025) is 15,743.

New official ohio state record.

🎣 NEWS: State Record Hybrid Crappie Certified
🐟 The new state record hybrid crappie, weighing 4.27 pounds, and measuring 18.3 inches long with a girth of 16 inches, was caught by Jesse Miller of Middletown, Ohio. Mr. Miller caught his hybrid crappie April 1, 2026 while fishing near the Middletown Dam on the Great Miami River, using a spinning rod spooled with six pound test monofilament line and offering a minnow below a bobber. This fish marks the first entry into Ohio’s new state record fish category for hybrid crappie.

🤓 Fisheries biologists Kipp Brown and Mike Porto from Wildlife District 5 in Xenia confirmed the identification of a hybrid crappie, noting that hybrids are not unusual in water containing both species. Ohio’s record fish are determined on the basis of weight only and are certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee with assistance from fisheries biologists from our agency.
