The older I get, the more I appreciate the little things that make a house feel like home.

A warm light at the end of the day, a made bed, a quiet evening with a good book... it's amazing how simple changes can completely transform the atmosphere of a room.

We recently updated our bedroom with Healthy Home Shop's circadian light bulbs, and they've made our evenings feel even cozier. Sometimes it's the smallest upgrades that have the biggest impact.

Have you ever made a simple change in your home that made you wonder why you didn't do it sooner? 🤍

🌽 There are hundreds of cornbread recipes out there, but this is the one we keep coming back to.

Whether we're serving a big pot of homemade chili or just enjoying a warm slice with butter and a glass of milk, this cornbread always disappears fast. I swapped the sugar for pure maple syrup, and I love how it adds just the right touch of sweetness.

Recipe:

Ingredients
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup cornmeal
• ½ cup pure maple syrup
• 1½ tbsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted
• ½ cup oil
• 1¼ cups milk
• 3 eggs

Directions Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a cast iron skillet (or a 9×13 baking dish).

Add all of the ingredients to one large bowl and mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into your prepared skillet and bake for 35–45 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.

How do you eat your cornbread? Plain, with butter, or drizzled with honey? 🌽❤️

⚠️ This is your warning before you make homemade tortillas... because once you do, everyone starts requesting them. 😂

I genuinely used to think homemade tortillas sounded like way too much work, but they've become one of our favorite kitchen staples.

Now whenever I make them, I double the batch and freeze the extras. It only takes a little extra effort, and future me is always thankful on those busy days when I don't feel like cooking from scratch.

If you've been wanting to try making your own, here's the recipe I use:

🤍 Homemade Flour Tortillas
(Makes about 10)
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp fine sea salt
• ⅔ cup very warm water
• 5 tbsp light olive oil

Directions: Add everything to one bowl and stir until a shaggy dough forms. Knead for 2–3 minutes until smooth, then cover and let it rest for at least 15–30 minutes.

Divide into 10 equal pieces, roll each one out as thin as you can, and cook in a hot, dry skillet for about 20–30 seconds per side, or until lightly browned and bubbly.

✨ Pro tip: Double the batch and freeze the extras. You'll thank yourself later!

Have you ever made homemade tortillas? If so, what's your favorite thing to fill them with? 🌮

Sometimes the best thing you can do is let nature do its thing. 🦆

We normally clean our duck coop much more often, but with several broody ducks incubating eggs, we didn't want to disturb them. Once the ducklings hatched, it was finally time for a much-needed cleanup.

We removed all of the old bedding for the compost pile, added fresh pine shavings, sprinkled in zeolite to help absorb moisture and control odors, and finished with a poultry spray to help discourage mites and other unwanted pests.

Gifted product: Premo Guard poultry spray

A clean, dry coop makes for happier, healthier ducks. ❤️

How often do you clean your duck coop?

I've seen enough men hold fish for pictures... so I figured I'd show off my chickens instead. 😂🐔

Would you pose with your favorite chicken?

Every single morning they act like they've never been fed before. 😂🐓🐰

I wouldn't trade this routine for anything. It's one of my favorite parts of living on our little homestead.

Do your animals think they're starving too? 🤣

When we started homesteading, I thought the hardest part would be learning new skills.

I was wrong.

The hardest part has been learning patience, with myself, with unfinished projects, and with the fact that there will always be another chore waiting tomorrow.

Somewhere between the early mornings, muddy boots, collecting eggs, and caring for our animals, I've realized that success doesn't always look like checking everything off a list.

Some days, simply showing up and taking care of what's in front of you is enough.

These are a few of the lessons homesteading has taught me so far, and I know there are many more to come. 🌿

If you homestead, what's one lesson you've learned that you wish someone had told you before you started?

If you're dreaming of starting a homestead, what's something you're most excited—or nervous—about?
I'd love to hear your thoughts. ❤️

Winter me is going to be so happy. 🥚🤍

Water glassing is an old food preservation method that can keep fresh, unwashed eggs for months when done correctly. I finally decided to preserve some of our extra eggs, and I'm excited to see how they turn out.
I'll share an update in a few months!

Have you ever tried water glassing eggs?
