In the mood for a simple and delicious dessert? Here is one of my favorites from my ecent trip to France--Pain Perdu with caramel sauce and chantilly. In the U.S. we usually serve Pain Perdu ("lost bread" aka French Toast) for breakfast. But the French make it for dessert. This version had a wonderful caramel sauce drizzled on top and surrounded it with bndles of chantilly (whipped cream). I've also had it served with vanilla ice cream on top and finished with loads of warm chocolate sauce. So simple but elegant. Try it for your next dinner party.

I am back home in New Orleans but still dreaming of all the good food I had in France and England. Isn’t traveling all about eating and shopping?

Today London was rainy and very windy. But that didn’t stop me from going to the weekly small farmers market and large international food booths at Duke of York Square close to Sloan Square. It’s a favorite for Londoners and one missed by most tourists. Maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much. It’s a short walk from Sloan Square tube station amongst some great shopping. I always shop at Cos, my favorite, and shop at nearby John Lewis department store where Londoners shop.

A busy day at one of the largest antique fairs in Europe. So much to decide on. Here are a few of the things I chose. It will be at least a couple of months before any of these will make it the shop. And the great “BB” monogrammed towel will never make it the shop because it will live at my house!

The sun is out in Lincolnshire England. But don’t let it fool you— most of the day was windy and rainy. But, in sunshine, Lincoln is a beautiful city— a cathedral, a castle wall, an old British phone booth and cobblestone streets. The castle is home of one of the remaining copies of the Magna Carta.

From croissants to toast and jam. After the train across the Channel, I am now in England enjoying full English breakfast of bacon, hash browns, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes and toast minus the eggs, sausage and black pudding. Weather has also changed from heat wave to rainy cooler days

Another day, another flea market. This time it was “The” Paris Flea Market—the oldest and largest in France. Prices are a bit higher there but I did find a few things. I bought some of the torchons (kitchen towels) in that basket and some manche a gigots (bone holders for carving leg of lamb), among other things. And I finally ate a Croque Monsieur, one of my favorite French dishes.

French football! I went out for dinner and found myself on the middle of passionate French football fans. People gathered in the cafes all watching the game on a small screen TV. I think I was the only one who wanted to order Joe Saints won the Super Bowl. Fireworks, horns honking and people singing and running in the streets.

Rouen in Normandy is a French city that most Americans seem to skip. I love the city. It is a short train ride from Paris. (a little more than an hour)
It’s quite inexpensive to take the train in France. To Rouen was less than $40 round trip. I spent the night but it can be a day trip. Travel trip—if you spend the night leave your large luggage at hotel storage and just take what you need for one night in a backpack). This way I use Paris as my base and book the same hotel so I have a place to store big bags.

I came to France to get away from the heat in New Orleans but it is even hotter here in France and they don’t have air conditioning! Every day has been under an Extreme Heat alert. So they best solution is to sit at a cafe and drink a cold Orangina!
