My inspiration for making these series comes from a few different sources.
See, making modern celebrity prayer candles, as we have done for 10 years, has always been in the trickster spirit. It’s not to mock anyone but rather to ask: who gets to be a saint and why?
When I started looking into mythology across cultures I realized that they had one thing we don’t: we don’t take time to honor the trickster spirit that exists within all of us and in all cultures, and when you don’t take time to honor Loki, or Anansi, or Maui— what ends up happening is that trickster bubbles up and ends up in the White House.
We have to find a healthy way to hold space for this energy because it’s in its denial that we create more loopholes for its existence.
While watching K-Pop Demon Hunters, the song “I can be your Idol” hit me like a Mac truck— we so often outsource our devotion to these celebrities and icons and things outside of ourselves and they feed on our shame and our insecurities and make us feel never enough. We outsource our own culture to pop culture capitalism and rarely take time to honor the cultures and imaginations growing in ourselves and local communities.
So here is the initial drop of a whole world I’ve been building, as part of the .
If you don’t know much about trickster, there’s a sister post I’m posting that will tell you more. If you’re of European heritage, consider looking into Puck, Loki, Reynard the Fox or the folktales of Till Eulenspiegel. If of African descent, Anansi or Eshu might call to you. For Asian bodied folks- Sun Wukong and Kitsune might be your vibe. We also have Huehuecovotl (coyote), Maui, Heremes and one with a silly jester on it (representing you.)
I hope you enjoy or are at least mildly intrigued.
