Let’s talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of homesteading and animals. ❤️‍🩹

Last night, through absolutely no fault of her own, Ms. Pixie happily let herself out of an open gate after the goats managed to pop the clip off. 🙃 She decided to take herself on a little field trip across the road into the huge field next door.

She hasn’t been with us very long yet and usually comes right in from her smaller pasture for grain, so when I called for her, she didn’t come bouncing up to me the way our other animals do just yet.

Thank God for kind strangers and good people still out there. One passerby stopped to help, and another happened to be a cattle owner himself and helped us safely get her back where she belonged.

At one point I managed to get ahold of her halter, but she took off with my hand stuck in it. The result? One broken finger and a possible central slip injury to my middle finger. 😅

But at the end of the day… everyone is safe, and bones heal.

Homesteading isn’t always the picture-perfect moments with baby animals and sunsets. Sometimes it’s chaos, adrenaline, tears, pain, and learning lessons the hard way. But we still show up for them every single day because we love them that much.

Now I’m praying my finger heals without surgery and hoping sweet Pixie isn’t too traumatized to still trust and love me one day. 🐮

Today was a busy farm day!! 🐴🩺🌾

The vet came out for the ponies today! Huge shoutout to Dr. Heather and Green Glen Equine Hospital for always taking the absolute best care of our equines. We’re so thankful for them! 💕

We spent the morning cleaning the barn, waterproofing all the winter blankets, and getting everything packed away until the cold weather returns.

The little nuggets finally got to head out on pasture today and they were pretty excited about it! 🌱☀️

Then we spent the afternoon loving on some of the goaties. 🐐💕

Ms. Blanche was one of our very first goats. She came to us with her daughter Birdie back in April of 2022, and she’s been stealing hearts ever since. She absolutely loves boops, snuggles, and quiet time in the barn. 🤍

She’s actually one of the biggest reasons I started bringing a blanket and a book out to the barn whenever we bring home new residents. Sitting quietly and letting them come to me at their own pace became one of my favorite things — and to this day it’s still one of Blanche’s favorite things too. 🥹📖✨

Pixie is here!!! 🐮🤍 She’s settling in so nicely and getting used to all her new friends already!

One of my favorite things to do whenever we bring a new animal home is grab a blanket and a good book and just sit quietly in their stall with them. I love giving them the chance to check me out at their own pace and build that trust naturally. 🥹✨

There’s something so special about those first quiet moments together while they’re learning they’re safe and loved here. And last night she even came in for all the chin scratches, some kisses and a selfie!!💕

Does anyone else have little traditions or favorite ways to bond with new animals when they first come home!? 🐴🐐🐓

Looks like Momma Duck understood the assignment this year — she decided the best Mother’s Day gift was a fresh batch of adorable little hatchlings! 🦆🐥💛

There’s something extra special about celebrating motherhood while welcoming brand new life. Farm life sure knows how to make your heart grow. 🥹✨ Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Misfits Farm! 🌿

Who says feed doesn’t matter? We recently switched our girls to a mash grain from a local mill, and wow — what a difference! Egg production has gone through the roof, shells are much stronger, and the eggs have been consistently larger too!

Happy hens = happy eggs 🐓🥚

Okay okay the suspense is over! In May we will be welcoming Miss Pixie to our farm!! She’s a 9 month old Registered White Dexter! 🤍🐄

After much research (and a whole lot of looking 😅), we’ve decided she’s the perfect fit for our little homestead.

Did you know Dexters are one of the smallest multipurpose cattle breeds out there—making them perfect for smaller farms like ours!? Their milk is rich with butterfat, almost comparable to a Jersey, which makes it amazing for cream, butter, and other homemade goodies 🧈

And here’s a few more fun Dexter facts:
• Dexters are known for being hardy and adaptable, thriving in a variety of climates and conditions
• They’re efficient grazers, meaning they do well on less pasture and grain than larger breeds 🌱
• Their smaller size makes them easier to handle—great for family farms and first-time cattle owners
• Dexters are true dual-purpose cattle, valued for both their milk AND high-quality beef
• White Dexters are a bit more unique and eye-catching, adding a special charm to the herd 🤍

We can’t wait to welcome this sweet girl home and start this next chapter on the farm 🐄✨
