Before forming Davis Raines Design in 2001, Karen Davis has been an interior designer since 1992 beginning with luxury residential design projects in Los Angeles. Karen brought her residential design experience and passion for detail to hospitality design when she was inspired by Ian Schrager’s hotel projects and unique approach to design. She continued interior design for two internationally reco

gnized hospitality design firms in Los Angeles and New York and completed projects ranging from a 55-room boutique hotel in England, 1,000-room business hotel in Orlando, and luxury apartment hotels for business travelers living abroad in the Philippines. Davis Raines Design has completed residential projects in Manhattan, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Florida and has been involved with projects in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. Based on her experience with both residential and hospitality design, Karen has developed an individual approached to design for her clients. Each project represents each different setting, clients, and personality that are taken into consideration when working on a space and she draws upon those pieces for inspiration for the project. She is involved in all phases of a project: initial budgeting, space planning, kitchen and bath design, lighting design, selection of interior finishes, custom furniture and fabric design, and art/accessories selections. Karen’s work has been published in New England Home Magazine, CT Cottages and Gardens, and Beautiful Homes. She recently collaborated with Parisian designer India Mahdavi on a Connecticut project that was published in the October 2014 issue of Architectural Digest. Another recent project includes the design of an Upper East Side doctor’s office in New York City. She has also contributed blog posts for New England Home Magazine. Karen graduated from USC and after working for several magazines, went on to work for an interior design firm while completing the Interior & Environmental Design program from UCLA. As a result, she is certified by NCIDQ, a professional design & construction accreditation. She’s a member of ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and has served on the Board of Directors of NEWH (Network of Executive Women in Hospitality Design), as well as a member of IIDA (International Interior Design Association). She currently is on the Board of Governors for the Washington Club, a private club in Washington, CT.

This may be an unpopular opinion: I think progress is sometimes more thrilling than results; especially when it comes to home renovations. This space, once a library has been transformed into a gorgeous kitchen!
I couldn’t be more proud of the results - our interior design service and architectural planning with Suzanne Pertusiello - that we provided for this young family. Our goal was to create a first floor living space for a family caring for an aging parent - planning around the beautiful views! Witnessing this progress truly motivates me to keep moving forward. What motivates you more: a) progress or b) results?

If I had to pick my top 2 favorite things about Interior design, it would be difficult, but I’d choose: -designing spaces for my customers and -drawing design inspiration from their environment! This treehouse was created in the midst of the trees on the property and is a special family gathering spot. I am so grateful to have the opportunity as a business owner and designer to work with so many interesting people and help transform their personal spaces. What’s your favorite thing about your day-to-day life?

What gets you out of bed every morning? I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m partly motivated by that first steaming cup tea or a great tennis game/practice. But truly—mostly—I get out of bed to problem solve on projects where I design & install our customer’s home design goals and dreams - there’s no feeling on earth better than that. This staircase runner recently installed in time for a family gathering made such a difference for these homeowners, no more slipping! So tell me… what makes you rise and shine?

How old-school is this? I still carry a paper sketch pad for meeting notes! I enjoy having clear pieces of paper to use as a place to formulate ideas and I also like using pencil, pen & paper to sketch out dream home ideas for my customers and projects. What do you think of this habit? Outdated or classic? 📝

Do you have a happy place? Maybe a favorite patio near the lake or a favorite garden? I have a few to be honest, but these days, my favorite places are ones I create for my customers - it’s so satisfying to know my clients are enjoying the spaces at their homes we created together. Tell me about your happy place!
