Wilderness By Klaus Our life-like environmental displays capture the essence of your outdoor adventures, preserving cherished memories in stunning detail.

Found in Cabela’s, Bass Pro, museums, resorts, and beyond, each unique scene tells a story seen across the globe. Where it began...

Wilderness by Klaus has a storied history that began over three decades ago when artist and whitetail enthusiast Klaus Lebrecht’s passion for the outdoors led him to the taxidermy industry, where antler and nature reproductions were in their infancy. He paid a fellow

to teach him how to make antler replicas by casting a mold of real antlers then pouring liquid plastic into the mold. Klaus spent years perfecting this craft, eventually landing on polyurethane plastic, which helped him achieve a hyper-realistic look. He began selling his reproductions to taxidermists, archery shops, corporate businesses and individuals. Soon clients came in droves for his lifelike antler reproductions, including Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, the NRA and the National Turkey Federation. Where it went...

New inspirations soon filled Klaus. He began using the same proprietary process he developed for antler productions to create hyper-realistic nature replicas and displays and launched a new business—Wilderness by Klaus. He also discovered a passion in the need for premium quality, exceptional blanks and display elements for the fish reproduction industry and started Waters by Klaus. Today, outdoor enthusiasts, retailers, nature centers, museums, resorts and theme parks hire him for his artistic skill and team of exceptional craftsman. The businesses he runs with his wife Nola have grown and become known for putting quality over quantity, using the highest-grade materials and being committed to unparalleled realism in every reproduction. Where to find our work…

Wilderness by Klaus outdoor scenes are unique, tell a story and are found all over the globe—from Bass Pro Shops, Field & Stream stores, Cabela’s retail shops to Kalahari Resorts, museums, nature centers, and hunter trophy rooms. His works have found prominence in wildlife books, magazines, catalogs and digital mediums too.

A truly memorable wildlife display should do more than show you a scene. It should make you wonder what happens next.

At Wilderness by Klaus, we create lifelike environments designed to draw the viewer in and give the imagination somewhere to go.

A bear tucked inside its den. A trail disappearing around a rock face. A forest floor filled with roots, fallen limbs, moss, texture, and the small details that make a setting feel alive.

Those details matter because realism creates connection.

Our artisans recreate natural environments with extraordinary attention to texture, form, color, habitat, and storytelling. The goal is not simply to decorate a space. It is to create an experience that invites people to look closer, explore longer, and imagine themselves inside the scene.

From museums and nature centers to trophy rooms, attractions, commercial spaces, and one-of-a-kind custom installations, every Wilderness by Klaus project begins with a vision and is built around the story the space needs to tell.

A wildlife display should feel alive.

Creating action indoors is about much more than placing mounts in a habitat.

The position of each animal, the terrain beneath them, the surrounding vegetation, the backdrop, and even the direction of movement all help tell the story.

In this scene, the interaction between the lynx and ptarmigan creates a moment that feels like it was captured in the wild. The surrounding mountain habitat gives that action a believable setting and turns the display into something you can experience from across the room or study up close.

That is what we work toward at Wilderness by Klaus.

Not simply a collection of mounts, but a complete natural environment that gives them context, movement, and life.

Create a trophy room that tells your story.

The wild does not have to end at the door.

A trophy can bring back the memory of a hunt, but the right environment can bring back the entire setting.

At Wilderness by Klaus, we create custom wildlife habitats that surround your mounts with the terrain, vegetation, textures, and natural details that make a scene feel complete. From the trees and ground cover to the rocks and backdrop, every element works together to recreate the character of the outdoors.

This whitetail scene is a great example. Instead of simply displaying the animals, the habitat places them back into a believable autumn woodland setting and gives the entire room a story.

Your trophies represent places you have been, hunts you remember, and experiences worth preserving. We help build the environment around them.

Bring the wild indoors with Wilderness by Klaus.

This takes us back to Ely, Minnesota, and one of those installations that shows just how big immersive storytelling can get.

At the North American Bear Center, our team installed this massive custom replica pine tree as part of a lifelike natural environment, complete with carefully placing two bear cub mounts into the finished scene.

From the smallest habitat element to a tree that commands an entire room, details matter.

The texture of the bark. The placement of a branch. The surrounding rockwork. The relationship between the animals and their environment. Every element works together to make the scene feel believable up close and help visitors connect with the story being told.

That level of craftsmanship has been at the heart of Wilderness by Klaus for decades.

Whether we're creating an immersive museum or nature center exhibit, a private trophy room, an outdoor retail environment, or a themed attraction, our team brings together design, fabrication, artistry, realistic habitat elements, and on-site installation to transform ordinary spaces into natural environments people remember.

Your space has a story to tell. Let’s build the environment that brings it to life.

The wild doesn’t have to stay outside.

At Wilderness by Klaus, our work goes far beyond recreating the landscape. Sometimes, bringing a natural environment to life means looking beneath the surface.

These aquatic displays are examples of what can happen when the talents of Wilderness by Klaus and Waters by Klaus come together. Using premium Waters by Klaus fish blanks, our in-house artists combine detailed fish finishing with custom rockwork, driftwood, vegetation, scenic backgrounds, and habitat elements to create displays that feel alive from every angle.

From schools of fish moving through submerged timber to bass and trout suspended over rocky habitat, every element is designed to work together as one complete scene, not simply a collection of individual pieces.

That collaboration gives us the ability to create highly realistic aquatic environments with the same attention to detail we bring to our terrestrial wildlife displays.

There is a lot more to realistic faux stonework than simply putting the pieces in place.

In this project highlight, Klaus is working on the finishing stages of a custom faux stone chimney built for one of our commercial clients. The goal was to help recreate a well-known historic mining and hunting cabin from their area, right down to the character of the original stonework.

Earlier in the build, Klaus installed the faux stones and used our stone mache mix along the cut corners. This helps blend adjoining pieces together and gives those edges a more natural, rounded contour instead of leaving behind sharp cuts that can give away the illusion.

After a quick coat of primer, it is time for one of the details that really brings the work together: color.

Klaus paints and blends the individual stones by hand, building layers of color until the newly finished areas flow seamlessly into the surrounding rockwork. Texture, contour, and color all have to work together if the finished piece is going to feel believable up close.

It is this kind of hands-on detail that goes into the unique commercial environments we create at Wilderness by Klaus.

We hope you enjoy watching the process. If you would like to see this project come together from start to finish, check out our previous videos or wander over to the Wilderness by Klaus YouTube channel for the full-length build.

Have a commercial or retail space that could use a rustic transformation? Maybe you want to bring the feeling of the outdoors into a display, exhibit, customer experience, or themed environment. We would enjoy hearing what you have in mind.

A trophy collection can show what a hunter has accomplished. But when it’s designed with intention, it can tell the story of where that hunter has been, what they pursued, and the experiences that shaped a lifetime in the field.

This image captures only a portion of an extraordinary collection belonging to a prolific sheep hunter.

When we began working with his harvested specimens, our goal wasn’t simply to find a place for each mount. We wanted to understand the journey behind the collection—and then create an environment that would allow that story to unfold throughout the space.

So we approached the room in cohesive chapters.

Individual specimens were brought together with sculpted rockwork, mountain terrain, scenic backdrops, vegetation, and carefully considered placement to create scenes that feel connected rather than isolated. Each area has its own presence, but together they become part of one larger story.

As you move through the room, you’re not simply viewing a collection of wild sheep.

You’re following a hunter’s journey.

The destinations. The pursuits. The memories. The years spent building a collection that means far more than what can be seen on the wall.

That’s what we believe a great trophy room should do.

Your collection already has a story. We create the environment that helps tell it.

This isn’t just a trophy room. It’s a return to the places where the stories began.

This view captures just one portion of a large custom trophy room created by Wilderness by Klaus, and it shows what happens when every element of an environment is designed to work together.

From the mural extending the landscape beyond the walls, to the dimensional rockwork and carefully placed vegetation, every detail is built around the customer’s harvested specimens to create one cohesive, immersive scene.

The goal is never simply to create a backdrop for a collection.

It’s to recreate the feeling of the wild.

The terrain. The depth. The atmosphere. The environment surrounding each animal. When mural work, rock formations, vegetation, habitat details, and trophy placement come together correctly, the boundaries of the room begin to disappear.

The result is so realistic, you might forget you’re standing indoors.

That is the difference between displaying a collection and building an environment around the memories behind it.

Want a full-size replica tree in your trophy room? We can do that.

For this private trophy room, our team was asked to create something far beyond a traditional collection display.

The vision was to blend the client’s harvested specimens with reproduced habitat scenes in a way that felt cohesive, immersive, and personal. Rather than positioning each specimen as an isolated piece, we designed the entire room to work as one connected environment, telling the client’s story through terrain, elevation, vegetation, rockwork, scenic backgrounds, and intentional placement.

A full-size reproduction of a pine tree became the centerpiece of the space. Its trunk and canopy draw the eye upward, add architectural scale, and connect the wildlife scenes throughout the room. From the rocks at ground level to the specimens positioned among the branches, every sightline reveals another layer of the installation.

The result is more than a trophy room. It is an environment that surrounds the collection with a sense of place and brings the memories behind it back into view.

Your private trophy room or commercial retail display does not have to follow a familiar formula. When you depart from tradition, the space itself can become part of the experience—one that guests, customers, and visitors remember long after they leave.

How do you create the look and character of a full decorative stone chimney without the weight and expense of building it from genuine stone?

You recreate every detail, one carefully placed faux rock at a time.

In this highlight from a longer How It’s Done video, Klaus introduces the new faux rocks from Indoors by Klaus while completing a customized installation for a client.

Watch as Klaus finishes adhering the rocks to the chimney structure, carefully arranging each piece to create a natural stone pattern. He then blends the corners together using a stone-mâché mix, shaping and finishing the transitions so the individual sections become one realistic, continuous stone surface. 🛠️

It is a combination of innovative materials, artistic vision, and patient craftsmanship. The finished chimney delivers the scale, depth, texture, and visual impact of genuine masonry while avoiding the excessive weight and expense that real stone could add to the project.

Do you have a private or commercial space that needs a customized rockwork installation, themed environment, dramatic architectural feature, or one-of-a-kind focal point?
