Tommy Cakes Seed

Tommy Cakes Seed Bird Seed: suet cakes, bird seed cylinders. We provide high quality bird seed creations designed to nourish and connect with Nature.

Taking notes from my micro and home bakery friends, we are now pre-making our spicy Tommy Cakes Crumbles. I have 3 batches on the drying table, and once the mix is dry, I can make any one of our seed or suet creations (since this is the base mix for everything).

I am also going to be offering Tommy Cakes Crumbles + bird feeder bundles. They make GREAT gifts, and your backyard birds will LOVE the bird seed.

Prototype bird feeders are coming soon! We’ll have an Etsy sale for them too.

Stay tuned!

It is so nice to come home after a week of travel. I am checking on the shoreline plants, the garden and (of course) my feeders.

As I was filling up the Lakeside Oriole Feeder, I spotted a young grackle hiding on the rocks and in the grass by the Island of Lusciousness. It was being very quiet and not moving.

Well, except for its “feed me” mouth!

Our pollinator plants are blooming, and we are really trying to attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Comfrey is in its second year and ROCKING!!!! We also have bee balm and other flowering plants coming.

We got the comfrey from Two Chicks School and Homestead from Illinois. We have 11 strong plants, and I am so excited to see it really take off this year!

Happy Memorial Day!

Today we continue to remember our Running Hummingbird Danny. Our oldest son passed on September 11, 2022, and we miss him so much everyday.

Son, brother, friend, fierce competitor, decorated veteran…that was our son.

Like the hummingbird, Danny could run like the wind for incredible distances. He was an ultra marathoner, and he had that intensity and competitiveness that would take him for endurance runs for hours. A marathon is considered a warm-up for these runners….

We miss Danny dearly, and that is why we love our hummingbirds so much: it reminds us that he is always near.

Run free, my son. Run free, my hummingbird.

Sorry I have been away. There has been a lot happening here including a little vacation time, some travel up north to Two Harbors, MN; Web Lake, WI; and the Upper Peninsula. MI.

My son Ryan and his lovely girlfriend got engaged, and we went to a fun engagement BBQ in Owatonna, MN.

Julie and I also had a booth at our first Farmer’s Market here in New Richmond. We made new connections and sold a little bit.

All of that is in the rearview mirror. Things are accelerating fast, and while I would love to do ALL the things, I have time for Tommy Cakes Seed. It brings me a lot of joy, and that is what I am going to do.

Stay tuned for more announcements soon. Let’s go!

The hummingbirds are here, and we LOVE it! Do you see that hummingbird sitting on the fence above the old wringer washer?

We love our hummingbirds, and feeding them is super simple. We use the following recipe:

✔️4 cups of water
✔️1 cup of plain sugar

We warm up the water, add sugar, stir it all together and let it cool to room temperature.

Once it is cool, we’ll add it to a clean feeder and hang it for the hummingbirds. We store extra nectar in the fridge in a glass container.

With Orioles and grackles hitting the feeders, we don’t store it long!

Keep your feeders clean and full, and you should get some great Oriole and hummingbird action all summer long.

After spending the week in Chicago, I stepped out of my car and was immediately swept away by an orchestra of song and sound!

A lot of birds are returning to the North and building nests and foraging. I popped open the Merlin app to see who was part of the orchestra at The Landing, and I wasn’t disappointed!

Time to fill the feeders and keep everyone here and happy!

To that end, I will be in The Creation Station and making donut stackers, seed cakes, cylinders and bird feeders this weekend.

Your backyard birds should try some; they will thank you because Tommy Cakes are DELICIOUS!

Happy Earth Day, Friends!

A year ago I started Tommy Cakes Seed LLC on Earth Day 2025. I started this small but mighty bird seed company because I wanted to provide better bird seed creations for our backyard birds. So much of the commercial seed and suet is cheap filler seeds, corn paste and other cheap ingredients.

I wanted to make something better.

If you watch the video on this post, you’ll see some Tommy Cakes Donut Stackers drying and ready to be shipped to a customer in Illinois. They look like a granola power bar that we would eat.

Notice: no corn, no millet, no thistle.

That means birds won’t drop millet and/or thistle seed all over your yard. Birds LOVE our cakes, cylinders and stackers. My goal was to make quality seed creations that backyard birds love.

At the same time as we have been talking with our customers, we know that some folks need feeders. So….we are venturing into making bird feeders as well. The last image is a prototype Oriole Feeder. I have a few varieties of these as Orioles are one of my favorite birds.

I will be working on seed cake and suet feeders as well. Stay tuned.

I am having a lot of fun making things and being creative while feeding backyard birds all over the US. It has been a great learning experience, and I am excited to see what we make next!

Happy Earth Day, my friends!

It is a beautiful day, and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the day than Elvis the Cardinal feeding beautiful Priscilla at the Bird Buddy Pro.

Did you see it?

It happens right at the start of the video (less than 4 seconds in). Watch it again! It is a beautiful moment of our royalty here at The Landing.

A year ago, I started Tommy Cakes Seed LLC. It has been an incredible ride so far, and I am thankful for the new connections I have made with customers and people all over the country. After podcasting for 10+ years, this is DIFFERENT connection: face-to-face and exchange of energy (money for a physical product).

I have learned a lot over the year. This has been a great experience, even when things went wrong or didn’t quite work the way I intended them.

But that is why I said “learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday” on the Small Scale Life Podcast.

As I listen to Elvis singing at the top of his lungs and leading the backyard bird orchestra, I KNOW this is the way.

Thank you for following and being a part of the Tommy Cakes Flock! We are going to be stepping forward with new products and offerings.

We are also going to be at the New Richmond Art Fair on May 29-30 and the New Richmond Farmers Market on every other Saturday starting May 15.

This is going to be fun! See you there!

Happy Earth Day!

Spring Migration 2026 is ON, and lots of birds are showing up to The Landing looking for food and water.

Good thing is: Tommy Cakes Seed Headquarters has it all.

I was laughing today at lunch: our backyard is ringed with loaded feeders and bird baths. I also added two cleaned and rehabbed birdhouses, which are now occupied (in less than 24 hours)!

My goals are simple: create a beautiful backyard bird sanctuary AND produce high quality bird seed and bird feeder creations.

We are well on our way! Look at all the bird the Cornell Labs Merlin App picked up on 4/20/2026!!!!

A purple finch drops in the Bird Buddy Pro at The Landing for some Tommy Cakes Crumbles. This is a handsome and sharp looking male!

His side body peck at the Suet Cup reminds me to get some suet out for them; they will love it!

Birds, like me, are migrating back north. They are hungry and thirsty. Get some seed and water out for them!

Just in time, the Tommy Cakes (Bird) Seed Etsy Shop is OPEN! I had a work trip this week, and so I put it on vacation mode while I was gone.

No more! We are OPEN for you!

But some bird seed creations: your backyard birds will love it and thank you!
