If that’s you — stop waiting. Here’s the exact formula I use in every room I design, six kids deep, so you can stop guessing and start doing.
1 Clean and clutter-free. Nothing earns a spot by default.
2 No more than three main colors — one dominant, one supporting, one accent.
3 Functional for real life. If it doesn’t hold up to how you actually live, it doesn’t belong.
4 Every item chosen for one reason: color, story, shape, space, or function. If it can’t answer why it’s there, it goes.
5 One consistent style, carried through the whole space. Not matched — consistent.
6 The room is filled with love and hospitality.
That last one isn’t optional. A room can hit every rule above and still feel like nobody’s welcome in it.

3 Functional for real life. If it doesn’t hold up to how you actually live, it doesn’t belong.
4 Every item chosen for one reason: color, story, shape, space, or function. If it can’t answer why it’s there, it goes.
5 One consistent style, carried through the whole space. Not matched — consistent.
6 The room is filled with love and hospitality.
That last one isn’t optional. A room can hit every rule above and still feel like nobody’s welcome in it.

I’ve used this formula on every room I’ve designed and styled. It works because it’s a sequence, not a mood board.
    1    Clean and clutter-free. Nothing earns a spot by default.
    2    No more than three main colors—one color leads (60%), one supports (30%), and one shows up as an accent (10%)—never three colors competing equally for your eye.
    3    Functional for real life. If it doesn’t hold up to how you actually live, question if it belongs.
    4    Every item chosen for one reason: color, story, shape, space, or function. If it can’t answer why it’s there, it goes.
    5    One consistent style, carried through the whole space. Not matched — consistent.
    6    The room is filled with love and hospitality.
That last one isn’t optional and it isn’t decoration. A room can hit every rule above and still feel like nobody’s welcome in it. I’ve walked into plenty of beautiful rooms that weren’t finished — because nothing in them said come in, sit down, stay. Love and hospitality carry as much weight as the other five. They’re just harder to photograph. Save this—apply to one room and see what changes.

For some reason I felt very strongly that we needed to travel from Texas to Utah and Nevada to visit family during the summer. The packing, planning, and staying for several weeks felt too hard at times, but looking back on the photos and video from the trip reminded me of how worth it is to be with family and friends. If you live far from family, you get it. When I asked my kids their favorite memory from summer, all of them mentioned something from this trip. Do the hard thing. Take the trip if you can, because the memories live with your children for a lifetime!

Beautiful storage and six kids’ worth of dishes can live in the same piece.
I used to think function and beauty took turns — that a cabinet holding this many plates had to look like it was bracing for impact. But the pieces I love most now are the ones that do both: shelves worth leaving open, dishes close enough to set the table without a second thought. This arched cabinet went to work the day it arrived, and it made the whole corner feel finished doing it.

I had just finished breastfeeding my baby when I decided I was done staring at that brown fireplace.

I laid her down, walked straight to the basement, grabbed a can of primer — and started painting.

No plan. No Pinterest board. No permission from anyone.

That was 2015. And it was the beginning of something I didn’t expect — a transformation that was one part home and one part heart.

Changing my space became a reflection of the inner work I was doing. Every wall I painted, every room I rearranged, every piece I chose with intention — it was me deciding that my home and my life were worth the effort. Even in the chaos. Even with little ones everywhere.

Since then, we’ve transformed every room in two homes. I earned an interior design certification. I wrote a book about creating soul and style in your home. I’ve helped clients turn houses into homes that actually feel like theirs.

But here’s what matters most: I’m still a mom of six who knows that some days the house is a mess and the laundry wins. I’m not here to sell you perfection. I’m here because I believe that when a woman decides her home is worth caring for, something shifts inside her too.

Some days I sit down and just let it be hard. 🤍

I used to think a good mom pushes through everything.

What actually helped wasn’t a system or a schedule. It was letting myself feel it without judging myself. And then doing one small thing.

Make the bed. Put on music. Step outside.

Not fix the whole day. Just find one thing that’s good, beautiful and doable— and go from there.
