We can’t believe it’s the last day of August… but some pretty exciting things happened this month at Intertwined - swipe for a few highlights!!

(p.s. our crossbody belt bags we’re using in this pic are our go-to daily bags when we travel and there are only THREE left, so check them out before they’re gone!)

We met with leather-working, sewing, weaving, and embroidery artisans in Samayac, Chichicastenango, Lake Atitlan, and Antigua. We left feeling very inspired!

We created a gorgeous jaspe / ikat centered tablescape with Intertwined products from 3 different countries. Swipe to see where each is from! I’m always drawn combining different textures, materials, and patterns on a table, in a room, or in a home 💙

Jaspe (ikat) is a process where threads are tightly bound, hand-dyed, and then woven on foot looms to create softly blurred patterns. This video was taken of the process in Salcaja, Guatemala but ikat is a traditional weaving process that also exists in many other countries and cultures.

One of our favorite things about Moroccan leather…

The color isn’t perfectly even. This is because of the traditional dyeing process that uses natural materials.

The variation is actually what tells you it wasn’t rushed. It was made slowly, methodically, intentionally.

So when someone takes their time on something, you can usually tell.

One of the most interesting details about huipil textiles is what happens on the back side of the fabric.

Each weaver adds extra threads, by hand, to create patterns. When the thread isn’t needed, it “floats” across the back of the fabric instead of being cut. Which means that, if you flip a huipil inside out, you’ll see a network of loose “floating” threads.

So, the backside of any huipil is a testament to the weaver’s skill, and is what gives the front side its pattern and precision.
