An oldie, but a goodie!

These images are from a Kips Bay Show House room I designed in 2000. I seemed to have a knack for being assigned maids’ rooms, closets, and spaces in particularly challenging condition. This room was generous in size but required a considerable lift, including the removal of both the ceiling and floor, as neither was level.

I devised a formal entrance with a Living Room beyond. A stone floor and boiserie established the entry, while a millwork dado and upholstered walls brought warmth and refinement to the Living Room.

Leitmotifs were developed based on the frieze of a circa-1790 French mantelpiece. These motifs were interpreted in embroidery for the walls and echoed in églomisé trumeaux above both the mantel and the canapé. The embroidery continued onto the curtains in a positive-and-negative variation of the design.

Fine antiques gave the space soul and refinement. Best of all, one of my greatest clients hired us after seeing the room.

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, and this Entry set the stage for a grand procession through a large house designed for entertaining in Boca Raton many years ago.
We commissioned a grisaille in shades of rose, dusty pink, and mushroom, inspired by scenic panels from Zuber and featuring retour d’Égypte iconography and palm trees swaying in the breeze.

This romantic gesture presaged rooms filled with antiques from France, England, China, and Japan—a subtle nod to the Grand Tour.

For a residence in Paradise Valley, we created a free-standing chimney breast that separates the Living Room from the Family Room in a loft-like manner.

We made use of six different varieties of limestone sourced from around the world, each distinguished by its color and geological characteristics. I wanted to emulate the porous but dense quality of the stone with a highly reflective material that would serve as an interesting counterpoint.

After sourcing many types of textured and molded glass from a variety of manufacturers, I selected examples that shared characteristics with the limestone itself—pitted, tessellated, and sand-like varieties. Miriam Ellner created numerous samples in our palette utilizing Japan paints, mica chips, precious metals, and silver, gold, moon gold, lemon gold, and palladium leaf on the reverse side of the glass.

The different textures were cut into geometries that align with the limestone-clad walls, creating a visual complement between the dry and polished materials.

A handsome 18th-century Louis XVI mirror being installed in a grand drawing room on Fifth Avenue. The giltwood mirror, in a goût grec taste, reflects an 18th-century-style Russian chandelier, magnifying the light and creating a sense of enfilade within the room.

The Louis XVI–style boiserie, painted in a blanc de Meudon technique, dating back to the quarries of Meudon—is rendered in the palest dusty pink, ivory, and gold, creating a soft yet rich backdrop for the decorative elements within the space.

The rock crystal and polished nickel pendant in this dining room was executed by Matthieu Lustrier, whose workshops are based in France.

Rock crystal was selected for its relationship to the craggy mountains depicted in the églomisé mural beyond the dining table, reinforcing the dialogue between the lighting and the artwork.

We wanted this dressing area, part of a guest bath, to feel spa-like and restorative. The walls and floors were clad in a pale off-white limestone, while the dressing table shelf was fabricated from the French stone Vert Vert.

A chair upholstered in a pale aqua jacquard with a subtle sheen introduces a gentle note of color. Reflected in the mirror are shelves stacked with luxurious towels, reinforcing the sense of comfort and retreat.

This small library, nestled into a mountainside overlooking Paradise Valley, was conceived as a comfortable retreat. While we kept a careful eye on the budget, the room was designed around a neutral palette that allowed the artwork to take center stage.

The hero of the space is a collection of fifteen modernist paintings by a young Asian artist in red, black, and white. Framed identically and arranged with great care, the paintings were positioned to communicate with the geometry of the pavers just outside the room, creating a subtle dialogue between the interior and exterior.

Workroom visits are always a pleasure. I recently reviewed a series of curtains at DeAngelis (), our trusted drapery workroom. Danny, pictured here, oversees the operation.

The family has now welcomed a fourth generation, each deeply committed to the craft of making beautiful curtains. On the table is a shaped valance in a luminous textile from Christopher Hyland (), designed for “Her” bath in a Palm Beach residence. The valance is gathered at the corners to create fullness and enhance the fabric’s natural sparkle, while a Samuel & Sons () beaded trim anchors the diaphanous quality of the textile.

Some installation days justify the anticipation and prove deeply rewarding. This was certainly the case with a Ruhlmann-inspired pendant by Baccarat ().

Unlike the original Ruhlmann version with beads, this chandelier features cascading tiles in a “cracked ice” pattern of ancient Chinese origin. The decision to incorporate mirrored trumeaux above the mantel to the east and a commode to the north paid off handsomely, as the pendant reflects into these surfaces, amplifying light throughout the room.

Nancy Lorenz’s () panels, based on the Phases of the Moon, subtly echo the cracked ice motif toward the base of each of the six panels created for this large dining room.
