During a very enjoyable podcast with Alexa Hampton () yesterday, I happened to mention a trim I commissioned Scalamandre () to execute many years ago that was based on a pillow belonging to Joan Briton, a very talented interior designer and antiquaire in the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s, whose Pekingese dogs dined on the tassel fringes on most of Joan’s pillows.

I loved the chewed-up look and asked Ed Goodman if he could copy the trim.  He did and, to this day, I use it all the time, now with Samuel and Sons ()

One of our favorite haunts, P.E. Guerin (.e.guerin) is an Aladdin’s cave of sumptuous architectural and plumbing hardware. The oldest foundry in New York City, dating to 1857, it occupies a place of historic pride on Jane Street in Greenwich Village.

Scores of artisans employ centuries-old techniques to create unique fittings that elevate every space in which they are used.

A sitting room in a Minneapolis residence centers on a pastel portrait by Edvard Munch, set against an ink-colored gauffraged velvet wallcovering.

A cognac-toned Tabriz carpet, dating to the same period as the portrait, establishes the palette. A custom-colored curtain fabric, featuring a pomegranate motif, echoes the design of the carpet, while embroidery on the sofa pillow draws from the same source, highlighting the lighter notes of the scheme.

The result is layered, cohesive, and quietly luminous.

The color scheme for a corner bedroom on the 34th floor of the Pierre, overlooking Central Park, was based on an 18th-century French liseré—a Jacquard-woven fabric in which an extra set of warp yarns is used to create detailed motifs in lengthwise bands, interspersed with satin-woven stripes.

The fabric was colored in shades of shrimp, coral, turquoise, and off-white. The stripe was used in its entirety on the headboard, then cut into narrow bands to frame shrimp-colored taffeta and turquoise-colored satin. Lace netting was stretched over the taffeta to soften its value and add depth to the textile boiserie.

Ex*****on required exacting precision, with every element held plumb, true, and level.

A vignette created in the 1990s for the benefit of the Isabel O’Neil School of Decorative Painting.
Two students collaborated on the transformation of a satinwood dressing table, reimagined in chinoiserie on a black lacquer ground. Set against a paneled backdrop of patinated bronze and rear-illuminated frosted glass, pilasters of gold-and-white micro mosaic are crowned with Klimt-inspired églomisé panels.

An Adam-period giltwood mirror completes the composition, layered and graphic.

A Bagues-style mirror was created to accompany a parcel-gilt Bagues console for a private family hallway outside a series of bedrooms.

C.T. Hughes, an iron artisan, executed the metalwork to mimic the techniques of the Bagues console, while Osmundo Echeverria () finished the surface to complement the original.

A primary bedroom overlooking Lake Minnetonka was conceived in a Gustavian taste for an American-born couple of Swedish descent. The envelope is defined by custom-designed textiles, inkjet-printed and hand-sewn onto the walls to create a textile boiserie.

An advertisement featuring a favorite view of a residence designed for a young couple in New York.
A Leleu-inspired commode is paneled in mother-of-pearl, lacquer, and leaf. The carcass is further lacquered and dressed with gilded bronze mounts, topped with a stone selected to complement the panel designs.

Custom curtains overlooking Central Park frame both the view and the commode, enriched with embroidery, jewels, and silk trim. An art glass vase rests atop, refracting light through its spectral shards of crystal.

A luxurious yet comfortable living room overlooking Central Park on Fifth Avenue is defined by custom paneling in shades of ivory, dusty pink, and gold, creating a subtle, gracious backdrop for a collection of antiques spanning 19th-century French, English Regency, Italian Empire, Adam, and Directoire styles.

Sofas upholstered in dusty pink damask soften the room, encouraging intimate conversation against the sparkle of Central Park beyond.

A Palm Beach dining room, shown in full and in detail, is defined by panel bays painted on canvas and overlaid with églomisé.

The scenic compositions draw inspiration from the garden follies and ruins of 18th-century painter Hubert Robert, yet are rendered with a softer, more impressionist hand, closer to Monet. Glass panels, depicting trelliswork and guardrails, were executed by Miriam Ellner (), along with the painted canvases beneath.

An exceptional Meissen chandelier crowns a custom steel-and-bronze dining table, all set upon an early 20th-century Spanish Savonnerie carpet.

The result is painterly, layered, and quietly theatrical.
