This monumental Serapi is exactly both. Woven in the Heriz region of northwest Persia - likely in the 1880s - it carries the bold geometric vocabulary and structural authority that have made Serap rugs the cornerstone of great American collections for over a century.

The field is a deep abrash brick-red - that living, breathing variation in tone that only hand-spun, naturally dyed wool achieves over 140 years. Set against it, the ivory hexagonal medallion with its midnight navy center commands the composition with architectural precision. The pale blue-slate ground of the subsidiary border softens the whole without yielding an inch of presence.

The outer border - an ivory ground packed with tribal totems, stepped diamonds, and stylized animals - is pure village drawing at its finest: idiosyncratic, unselfconscious, and completely original. At nearly 19 feet, this rug anchors a great room, a gallery, or an entrance hall the way very few objects can.
