I never know what Ellis, my videographer, is going keep and what he's going to edit out but I just burst out laughing watching this for the first time. So good.

The combination of the man-made offset with nature. The Italians do it soooooo beautifully. To Italians, nature is another material to work with, to be taken into account. The material world and the earthly gifts. Okay I know I’m sounding a little esoteric but if you spend time in this place... it sinks in.

Regardless of the wealth of any region, the church had to maintain the appearance of god-like power. The architecture had to reach to the sky, the volumes had to be awe inspiring and the materials the most luxurious available to celebrate. So what do you do when you have to keep up but just can’t afford it? You fake it like everyone else. Faux Marbre is a painting technique which, when done with finesse and talent, can appear every bit like real marble. In fact, at a distance, it can be even more intricate than the real thing.

As a child I was surrounded by people who worked in my family's textile mills, by people who made things skillfully and who were proud of what they made. Shaking the hand of a man who works with stone all day is my honor.

When people hire me, they’re not interested in a two dimensional picture. They’re looking for a home. A house that not only functions beautifully but somehow adds to their experience of living there. The bedding, the walls, the texture of the floors. How light moves through the house, how you approach the house and move through it.

And Puglia. Oh Puglia. I do, in fact, feel the Pugliese soul. The slowness. The intention. The humanity of it. This is how people were meant to live.

Italy is impossible. The red tape, the Italian government etc. etc. So what makes me think I can do this? Team. That word gets used constantly and, frankly, I think it’s watered down. In its truest sense, it’s a group of people with complementary skill sets who work collaboratively to ease the production process. We have put that team together. We have builders in place, attorneys, realtors, architects, and geometras (local engineers) to make our intentions palatable to the locals. We aren’t working against the system. We are working with the system. With the people. Learning. Creating.

New York, you have my soul. I’m not leaving. I’m never leaving, and I’ll continue to scour New York for interesting details and the things that make living here special. However, after decades of wanderlust we have found a place that we feel as passionate about. Our next “there.” Infused with centuries of master craftsmanship, the love of nature, of real food (which is abundant) and a quality of life rarely found today, Puglia, and in particular Salento, is perfection. So in addition to my In Plain Sight series in New York, we’ll be covering the process of rescuing and elevating historic homes in Puglia!!!

A hundred people have interviewed me and talked about my work. And then asked for a story. They actually heard me. They listened. And they got it. Thank you for including me in your beautiful Spring ‘26 issue and for this thoughtfully crafted feature!

Ellis and I were strolling along on the way to The Met to recap a previous post. Happening upon the Cooper Hewitt I couldn't help but comment on a piece of my past and involvement in design for a LONG LONG LONG time. For me, this has always been real!!!!!

I absolutely respect the client whose home this is and her need for privacy... however I wish you knew because when a talented, curious person asks you to work with her... nothing better. Finding the table maker with her, her presenting the light fixture, I'm pretty sure she chose the gorgeous stone and we discussed how it would be used, the thickness and detail. It was a CONVERSATION. Perfect.

In your comments you all often ask, what inspires you? The details. Notice the originality and the talent behind objects. That's your start. Now find the connection in other objects even when they're not so obvious. It can be a similarity or a contrast.

It's more fun when you like the objects or the story behind them. It's why I enjoy my collab with Cara Cara.

PS Someone pointed out on the last post me touching my nose. OMG I didn't realize I did that, now it's all I see!!!
