“Tell us about your family” is an intro question when we interview new clients. And to us, “family” means four legged friends too. We’re nuancing a project this week and thinking all about a house full of and what they’d love. ? We always happy to share a few:
1) Think function first: A go-to spot we like to take advantage of is a laundry room with some extra space. In our room a few years back, a back door made our the ideal spot to store all the dog leashes and accessories, and then head out for a walk. In our current project, the team mapped out the paths and functions for the furry friends and we all got on board with designing with their needs in mind equally.
2) Materials matter most: Tile floors always make it a natural base for muddy paws 🐾, and mealtime too. Performance fabrics on the sofas, and rug fibers that can deal with shedding fur more easily, allow the lucky pups to lounge by the family as they wish. Yes, even up on the sofa and beside the bed.
3) Custom makes a difference: Our new project with multiple dogs happens to have a ton of custom cabinetry. We’re taking advantage and incorporating pullout drawers for food bowls and larger sacks of food. Using the laundry as a spot for mealtime gives us a sink and space for trash as needed. When the landscaping was being designed, an outdoor spot by the back door that will allow for a quick wash down, after a trip back from muddy trails, was a must. A hose is now ideally located and pea gravel helps manage the transition to the porch.
Cats 🐈⬛ and other pets all have their nuanced needs too- we have a test for fabrics that can withstand cat scratching ( hint: these are involved: 🍴) and who knew birds have a whole world to think of 🐦.
Got any other tricks? I’m all ears! DM me and we’ll surely put the good ones to use 🐶
