Around the Dinner Table, La Cena. One of my favorite pieces I’ve created. Like many families, so much of my time spent with my Abuela and family was around the dinner table. Doing homework after school, where my Lita folded clothes after doing laundry all day, where she cried and laughed telling us stories about her incredible life in Ecuador and in Houston. Where we always came together to eat whether it was after school with my mom and siblings or with Tios and Tias and primos we hadn’t seen in a while. Lots of rice and beans, lots of pan con queso y cafe. Arroz con leche. Pescado frito. Now that my abuelos are somewhere looking over us, we continue this tradition mostly with my mom and my cousins. I love that. It’s our duty to protect it. This piece capture the essence of exactly that, all that is and was.
