Respect the bones. Refresh the rest. When your client owns a 1960s home, your job is to honour what makes it special — then make it liveable for today. This mudroom is proof.

Proof that a teen bathroom can be practical and pretty. We traded dark and somber for light, fresh, and a little bit fancy. The soft sage tile sets the calm, while the quirky hook brings just enough personality to keep it from feeling too serious. Spa-like, but still fun for one very lucky teen.

Not every bathroom needs to shout. Sometimes a quiet monochrome palette does all the heavy lifting. There’s something quite soothing about this space.

Weekend real estate find: a Roy S. Johnson house for sale in my neighborhood. Designed in 1954, this one still has so much of what made Johnson’s work special - those strong angles, the bold roofline, and the light-filled spaces. He was a Westchester guy, grew up in White Plains and later lived in Tarrytown.

Has the house changed over the years? Yes, the original MCM warmth and materiality have definitely been stripped back, which is always a little hard to see. But the bones are still there, and they are really good.

This house could absolutely be bought back to its Mid-century glory with the right eye. I’d love to see it happen!

What do you do when a space already has great bones? The interior design of the Southwell House was all about balance. We worked with the original 1970s features — red cedar ceilings, terracotta tiles — and introduced a palette that felt right at home. Nothing showy. Just thoughtful choices, warm textures, and a little mid-century magic.
