I was quoted in this week’s Parade magazine about overdone décor trends. If you know me, you know I don’t pay attention to trends, no less follow them. As I see it, “Once something becomes a trend, it’s destined to become overdone.” Good design is never about purchasing a coordinated look, but developing an individual environment that reflects the homeowner—with some surprise mixed in.

Instead of relying on matchy-matchy furniture sets—a common way people furnish a room—smart design assembles a mix of pieces that relate to one another aesthetically. And, of course, that fits the client’s personal style.

In this downtown loft, I combined two Euro-inspired curved sofas with paired Midcentury chairs—and a modern club chair covered in fur. The custom industrial-inspired coffee table references the loft itself. The dining area also includes a seating set, custom 19930's inspired chairs combined with original 1940’s Tulip chairs.

Voila, a designer’s fresh take on an overdone trend.
