Amish Onion Fritters
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornmeal
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2/3 cup whole milk
- 2 cups white onions, chopped (about 1 medium onion)
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Oil for frying, as needed
Instructions
1. Prepare the Batter:
- In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and milk. Mix until you have a smooth batter.
2. Add Onions and Season:
- Stir in the chopped onions. Season the mixture with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
3. Heat the Oil:
- Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over high heat. The oil should reach a temperature of around 350°F (175°C).
4. Fry the Fritters:
- Once the oil is hot, drop spoonfuls of the batter onto the skillet. Flatten them slightly with the back of the spoon.
- Fry the batter until both sides are golden brown.
5. Drain and Serve:
- After frying, remove the cooked fritters from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
- Serve the fritters while they’re still warm.
