Known as “moonflask”, the form traces its origins to early Ming prototypes, while the Yongzheng imperial kilns transformed it through a distinctly refined and poetic aesthetic.

Across the two sides unfolds an auspicious garden scene of magpies among pomegranate blossoms and fruit, paired with quails amid bamboo, chrysanthemums and hibiscus.
The imagery conveys wishes for joy, peace, longevity and abundant offspring. Rendered in underglaze blue and layered overglaze colours, delicate butterflies and bees bring lightness and movement to the composition.

This moonflask has a distinguished provenance from the Leshantang Collection, and was featured in major publications and exhibitions. No identical example is presently known in major public or private collections.
Its combination of monumental form, sophisticated polychrome decoration and auspicious courtly imagery makes it a remarkable testament to the artistic achievements of the Yongzheng imperial kilns.

Beneath the translucent 𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘲𝘪𝘯𝘨 glaze, five-clawed dragons rise through crashing waves and auspicious clouds, their powerful forms articulated through finely carved low relief.

Known in Qing records as ‘Gonghua’, this technique allows the glaze to flow naturally across the raised decoration, creating subtle variations of tone and depth.

It was in the collection of Earl and Irene Morse, one of the most important American private collections of Chinese ceramics of the 20th century, and was exhibited at the China Institute in New York in 1972.

Few comparable examples are known, and no identical example has been identified in major public or private collections. It offers a rare glimpse into the Qianlong imperial kiln’s pursuit of innovation through the revival of classical forms.
