Christmas Tree Pull-Apart Bread

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm milk (110°F)
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce or pumpkin puree (for a seasonal twist)
1 large egg
1/4 cup pesto (for filling)
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon olive oil (for brushing)
Fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish)
Optional: Red and green sprinkles for decoration, or additional toppings such as garlic butter
Directions:

In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes, until the yeast activates and becomes frothy.
Add flour, salt, applesauce (or pumpkin puree), egg, and softened butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined, then knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle, about 12 x 16 inches.
Spread pesto evenly over the dough, then sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the pesto.
Cut the dough into 12 strips (across the short side of the rectangle). Stack the strips on top of one another, then cut the stack into 6 squares.
Arrange the squares in the shape of a Christmas tree on a greased baking sheet. Brush with olive oil.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs for a tree-like effect. Optional: Add festive sprinkles or garlic butter on top for extra flavor.
