Velvet Hour Lounge was designed around people. A place that rewards lingering, where comfort encourages conversation and the greatest luxury is not what fills the room, but what takes place within it.

Presiding over the sofa is ‘Femme sur Canapé avec Deux Servantes’ by Roméo Mivekannin , a West African artist from Benin, now based in Toulouse. Mivekannin revisits historic European imagery by painting his own face into the composition, reclaiming a place within images and history. The work asks us to reconsider how history is remembered, who is represented within it, and whose perspective shapes that memory. Roméo‘s work is thought provoking and holds an important part of the room.

Throughout Velvet Hour, we were drawn to pieces that carry meaning beyond their beauty. Surfaces reveal age and patination, objects hold histories, and art brings perspectives entirely its own. The room was never intended to tell a single story, but to bring different voices together and leave space for conversation.

Alongside Mivekannin’s hanging canvas, a Julie Curtiss print, sculpture from Manuel Neri and Karin Sajo’s Karin Sajo extraordinary textiles bring their own energy to the room. Different periods, materials and perspectives, gathered together in a space ultimately intended for the same thing: people, conversation and connection.

Highlighting the extraordinary efforts that went into the complete redesign of the fireplace in our Kips Bay Decorator Show House room.
Scott Daniel Strickstein Scott Daniel Strickstein accepted the enormous task of creating a site specific fireplace sculpture, with integrated lighting and all, in an impossible timeline.
Richard Haining Richard Haining crated a trio of commissioned wooden vessels made from decommissioned New York City water town wood, to add an airiness to the elevation.
Grietje Schepers Grietje Schepers felt chandelier illuminates the entire space while tempering the 18’ ceilings to create an intimate environment.
Paul Michael Graves Paul Michael Graves hand painted frieze and ceiling add visual interest and help break up the height of the space.

These are only some of the collaborative, bespoke efforts that went into our Kips Bay Showhouse room this year.
