Come and Join Us Tonight!
Galerie Shibumi There is no better city for an exhibition like First Generation: Woven Narratives than New York.
New York has always been a place of arrivals. Every block, every neighborhood, every subway car contains stories that began somewhere else. Some families have been here for generations. Others arrived yesterday. Yet somehow, through all our differences, we continue to build something together.
That reality feels especially relevant right now.
As New Yorkers celebrate a long-awaited Knicks championship, many of us are reflecting on what made that victory so meaningful. It was not simply about basketball. It was about trust, sacrifice, resilience, and the belief that a group of people from different backgrounds can achieve something extraordinary when they commit themselves to a shared purpose.
First Generation: Woven Narratives explores that same idea through the work of twenty-seven artists whose practices engage with identity, migration, heritage, memory, and belonging through fiber and textile-based mediums.
Textiles have always been more than materials. They are archives. They carry stories across generations. They preserve culture, tradition, labor, and memory. Like New York itself, they are built thread by thread, individual histories woven into a larger whole.
Featuring artists from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and lived experiences, this exhibition is a celebration of the people who make our communities vibrant, resilient, and constantly evolving. While each artist tells a unique story, together they remind us of a simple truth: our lives are deeply interconnected.
At a time when so much of the public conversation focuses on what separates us, First Generation: Woven Narratives invites us to consider what binds us together.
We are artists, neighbors, immigrants, descendants, dreamers, builders, and caretakers. We are many stories woven into one fabric.
