US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the BBC over edited clips of his January 6, 2021, speech. He is seeking up to $10 billion in damages on counts of defamation over how it spliced two separate excerpts.

The broadcaster apologized, acknowledging that the edited clips mistakenly gave the impression that Trump had made a direct call for violence ahead of the riots. The BBC has said that there is no legal basis to sue and that it will defend the lawsuit.

Trump’s claims have resulted in the resignations of BBC Director General Tim Davie and Chief Executive of News Deborah Turness and triggered one of the biggest crises that the publicly funded broadcaster has witnessed in its 103-year history.

This is not the first time Trump has sued a media company over claims of damage to his reputation.

Other media outlets, including CBS and ABC, have settled with Trump after he sued them following his victory in the November 2024 election. Trump has also filed lawsuits against The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Both have denied any wrongdoing.

Trump’s expensive legal challenges over media coverage have raised concerns about the potential impact on press freedom.
