I worked on my first pandemic era wedding last month. It was small and lovely and I’m so happy I got to do it. Also, this was the first time I’ve sent pieces for a chuppah that were attached on-site by members of the wedding party. I think they did a pretty good job! Congratulations Kate and Jonathan!

It’s taken me a moment to gather my thoughts to post here again. My general instinct when people are angry and in pain in ways I will never be able to understand is to shut up and listen. So I’ll just say my heart has shattered countless times in my life by stories and images of Black pain and neglect and injustice and murder at the hands of those in power, never more so than these past weeks. But it’s also been put back together by the collective bravery, tenaciousness, and love I’ve seen from people all over the world. I’m so heartened by the possibility of real change this time. And I do believe change is coming. As long as we keep our head in the game and don’t let the bastards grind us down we will win this fight. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ On a personal note, I’ve been in my own battle with COVID-19. I was sick for 53 days before finally receiving a negative test result last week. I am still not up to working but I am recovering, slowly but surely. Please take this virus seriously and go get yourself tested if there’s any chance you may have been exposed. It’s no joke and definitely not “just like the flu”.

Great idea Kaya, ! came through with this🔥list
・・・
In light of the events of the past two weeks, the Nitehawk programming team has put together a short list of recommended viewing to stream at home while we're closed, focusing on Black Americans, police discrimination, civil rights and the history of protest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHOSE STREETS? (Hulu, Kanopy)
A nonfiction account of the Ferguson uprising told by the people who lived it, this is an unflinching look at how the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown inspired a community to fight back—and sparked a global movement.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHEN THEY SEE US (Netflix)
Based on the Central Park Five case. Five teens from Harlem become trapped in a nightmare when they're falsely accused of a brutal attack in Central Park.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARSHA P. JOHNSON (Netflix)
As she fights the tide of violence against trans women, activist Victoria Cruz probes the suspicious 1992 death of her friend Marsha P. Johnson.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
CRIME + PUNISHMENT (Hulu)
Amidst a landmark class action lawsuit over illegal policing quotas, this documentary tells of the remarkable efforts and struggles of a group of black and Latino whistleblower cops and the young minorities they are pressured to arrest and summons in New York City.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
THE GLASS SHIELD (Amazon, Youtube etc)
Michael Boatman and Ice Cube star in Charles Burnett's story of a black police recruit in L.A., examining several incidents of racist behavior amongst the cops and within the legal system.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 (Prime)
Looking at the people, society, culture and style that fuelled an era of convulsive change, the film utilizes the mixtape format in a cinematic and musical journey into the black communities of America.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BURN MO********ER, BURN! (Showtime/Amazon)
An in-depth and provocative look at the 1992 Los Angeles riots exploring the roots of civil unrest in California and the relationship between African Americans and LAPD.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BLACK PANTHERS (Criterion)
Agnès Varda turns her camera on an Oakland demonstration against the imprisonment of activist and Black Panthers cofounder Huey P. Newton

Valentine’s Day! Holy moly it’s almost here! This year I’ll be scaling back a lot but I will be taking a limited number of V-Day orders. I’m thinking this year’s palette will be a soft, romantic mix of peaches and blush with a few darker accents thrown in. Flowers will be a mix of roses (duh), ranunculus, anemones, and other goodies. Please DM me if you’re interested in ordering! 💖

***Announcement***
Well friends, I didn’t want to have to write this post yet here we are. The time has come for me to say farewell to and my little shop. I’ve loved being here but unfortunately it has become clear that staying isn’t the right choice for myself or my family. So next weekend will be our last in the space. I will still be accepting a limited number of online orders as well as events, both of which you can inquire about on our website. This weekend and next, all our gift items will be 50% off and I also have a few plants I’d love to give to new homes for free. So please stop by, say hello, and pick up some goodies before they’re gone for good. ❤️
