It’s been two years since our house had its big moment in IKEA’s Life at Home Report. Feels like just yesterday that I was nervously opening our doors for the day to a film crew—the hidden hidey holes, the not-so-hidden hoarder spaces, and the pretty finished floors that we all usually see. When clients freak out about inviting me over, I wish they knew how I lived. Eeesh.
We were one of just eight homes featured globally, which is both an honor and a reminder that, yes, for some reason, our ongoing renovation chaos has its attractions. IKEA wanted to see how real people live, and so we gave it to them: a mix of vintage treasures, leftover design materials, and the occasional “this will look great once it’s finished” moments. So much of the latter!
What I loved most was sharing the idea that a home doesn’t have to be perfect—it just needs to be filled with items that embody who YOU are. Not me, the designer; not some store’s idea, but the resident. IKEA’s Life at Home Report explores how people around the world find joy in their spaces, and for us, that’s always been about experimenting, evolving, and welcoming a bit of chaos.
