Well, that’s a wrap on the Boy’s Room. Even though I have very definite ideas of what my rooms will eventually look like, it always comes as a bit of a shock when I finally get to see them fully assembled and in 3D. And I have to say, I’m really pleased with this result. You’ll want to see what Mom and son had to say!

The people have spoken: the boy’s room reveal is finally here.

A room is never more beautiful than in that magical hour when it’s all finally comes together. Sometimes, it makes me sad because I know that it will never again look as beautiful as it does in this moment. But, rooms are meant to be lived in and the success of a room is only as good as how well it works for its inhabitants. There is no question that this teenagers room will be tested, but hard wearing and forgiving materials were used to ensure a longer shelf life. I hope this room provides them with a soft place to land; a place to rest and be restored, and a place to dream.

Remember when your teachers use your words? Well, that’s my motto when it comes to coming up with a scheme for a room! Pick 3 evocative words that telegraph how you want the room to feel. Those words will act as the guide to help you select colors, materials and finishes and everything that gets selected for the space.

If you like discussing or learning the process and what goes into the making of a room, this will be the #1 hot topic on my Membership calls, so sign up to become a part of the conversation. Comment “MEMBERSHIP” below! 👇

It takes a village people! If you’re going to put an entire room(s) together in one day, you’ll need a skillful, hardworking and strong team to help you get the job done. I have been known to move a sofa from one end of a room to another all by myself, but I certainly wouldn’t expect that of you. Recruit the friends and family, hire a handyman or rent some movers or a bunch of high school students for half a day. This will give you the ability to experiment with multiple options before settling on the one that feels just right.

When it comes to a kid’s room, you’ve got to be a little strategic. Where are you going to put those necessary but not-so-pretty elements like a bulletin board, bookshelves, rolling carts, etc, where they’ll be accessible but not be the center of attention? My choice for the cork board was behind the door and it really worked! It provides twice as much space than your average store bought board, but nobody knows that it’s there when the door to the room is open.

Think about what you want to see when you first walk in and then, consider where the not- so-pretty will go by default.

If you use my method of “the three words” (selecting those three words that best describe how you want your room to feel), you’ll discover that selecting the wall color and the room’s palette becomes a breeze. The words basically tell you in which direction you need to go. For example, in the Boy’s Room, the words I selected on their behalf were “warm”, “earthy” and “cool”. As a result, I selected a brown that was both “warm” AND “earthy”.
