Kristen Coates Welcome to Kristen Coates. Art and objects for the well curated home.

Sourcing for the perfect piece of artwork for a client or the incredible architectural remnant I’m going to use as a centerpiece and then of course all the objects that have become Forgotten Island, it really is such a treasure hunt for me. Conceptually, bringing layers into your home and way of living, adds the personality and depth we crave in design. When I walk into a someone’s space I want to see exactly who lives there by the books they have on the coffee table and in the dining room. Tell me who you are by letting me see the art in your entry, above the sofa or mantle. This idea of living a considered life feels so much more like discovery and true collecting than conducting and constructing something we’ve been told is perfect styling. I have committed to bringing so much of what I find into the spotlight to share it with you. And you never know, you may just find your next Beautiful Thing in the gallery and online this weekend XO Kristen

What an extraordinary year in an extraordinary life. Michael and I finally wed after a decade and it was more incredible than I could have ever dreamed. My sister Heidi got her kidney transplant and she is healthy !! So many perfect trip moments, most On Holiday, the creative travel project I started officially. I wrapped my largest interior design project to date and was featured in Architectural Digest. Then I started a private members art club KRSTN Editions which has grown so quickly it has taken my breath away. My Substack I started a year ago has taken root and I decided to write a book a year, this year’s is half finished. And now I get to revel in all the new work I’m making in a new evolution in my gorgeous gallery all summer making friends and squeezing every ounce of sunshine and salt air out of Newport. I wish my parents were still in this realm, that Alex could have been at my wedding to annihilate the dance floor and keep my hair in place as she always did and of course that my sweet Uncle Murph could be here this June to have just one more summer with his family. If you’re thinking what you might give me as a gift this year - I urge you to spend more time with the people you love, call that friend you’ve been meaning to connect with and live your most extraordinary life as soon as possible. I am forever grateful to the people in my world that support me and inspire me to keep going in this wild magical time XO Kristen

Beautiful Things. A collection of objects as aesthetic observations. The details, colors, textures and stories make me pull these pieces in the gallery and similarly at home, time and time again from table scapes and shelf styling to a light refresh just before guests arrive.
I’ve added a few handwritten notes about what I see in each piece and why I fell in love with it. Find your next heirloom in stories here and in the gallery every Wednesday at 7pm. XO Kristen

Art Confidential is something I brought to light because I believe a single work of art deserves more than a wall of competition. Once a month, one painting truly featured, just one piece given the space to be fully seen. Rather than a traditional sale, each work is placed through private bid. The process is quiet. Confidential. Designed to connect the right painting with the right collector.

Vol. I is Confetti Inspiration. Bidding closes Sunday. If you’ve been watching, now is the moment to register. DM to bid XO Kristen

New on Substack: What Hotel Design Taught Me About Collecting Art

I have a habit of photographing hotel lobbies, not the grand, ornate ones, but the spaces that feel inevitable. Where every element arrives at exactly the right scale, creating an atmosphere you want to return to.

Hotels like La Ponche in Saint Tropez, The Proper in Santa Monica, Hôtel Costes in Paris, they understand what a lot of people miss when collecting art: curation isn’t about filling space. It’s about creating a feeling you want to return to.

The best hotel art doesn’t announce itself. It belongs. It grounds the room, adds warmth, a mood, creates a focal point that allows everything else to breathe. This is what I want for your walls too, not art that matches, but art that makes the room.

Read the full essay on Substack where I share what hotel design taught me about collecting with intention, curating backwards from experience, and why the art should drive the room, not follow it.

There’s a particular kind of hesitation I notice in the most accomplished people I work with. They’ve built careers that demand precision and vision. They’ve earned the freedom to live beautifully. But when it comes to their own homes, they second-guess themselves.

What if it’s too much? What if people think it’s indulgent? What if I get it wrong?

Here’s what I’ve learned: the homes that feel most alive aren’t the ones designed by committee or trends. They’re the ones where someone trusted themselves enough to say yes to what they love.

Permission isn’t something you wait for. It’s something you give yourself. This week I write On Holiday about allowing your ideas about design to come forward as your own.

To choose the painting that stops you cold, even if you can’t explain why. To live with color that makes your heart race. To build a collection that tells your story, not someone else’s idea of good taste.

This is the work I do, not telling you what you should want, but helping you recognize what you already love. Giving you permission to trust your eye. And then making it real.

Because you’ve earned the right to live in a space that feels like coming home to yourself.
