What in the ReStore is this?

Because the Wednesday ladies found it, and Abby agreed to hold it for photographic documentation.

Her face is doing most of the reporting.

We have looked at the object.

We have looked at Abby looking at the object.

Neither has provided clarity.

Teapot? Maybe.

Gravy-related? Possibly.

Medical? We sincerely hope not.

For a very small horse? Cannot rule it out.

Abby appears to have additional concerns, but at this time they remain classified.

Easton spent Saturday doing something very Easton.

She went to Lowe’s on Yopp Road, put on safety glasses, picked up a sander, and helped build beds for kids in Onslow County.

Laid-back Saturdays are not on Easton's schedule.

She volunteered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Lowe’s Home Improvement alongside a small army of people turning stacks of lumber into actual beds.

And by the end of the day, they had built 90 of them.

Ninety beds.

That is not a little community project. That is a full-blown lumber situation.

There was sanding, drilling, hauling, stacking, assembling, and enough sawdust to suggest everyone involved should probably just accept that it now belongs to them.

But 90 children in Onslow County will have beds because a bunch of people showed up and got to work.

That part is pretty hard to improve on.

We’re glad Easton was one of them.

Good news: you do not need to know how to build a house.

That’s what we’re here for.

When you arrive, we’ll get you set up with all the safety gear, go over the safety basics, and then put you to work learning something new.

Have a question? Ask it.

Never used a tool before? We’ll show you.

Not sure what you’re doing? Excellent. You’re in the right place.

Women Build is a safe place to learn, try new things, and occasionally stand around holding a piece of lumber while someone figures out where it goes.

What you should bring:
💧 Plenty of water
🥪 Lunch
👟 Closed-toe shoes

Everything else safety-related? We’ve got you covered.

Come ready to learn, get a little dirty, and leave knowing you helped build something.

No construction experience required.

Tuesday has entered the building carrying a bathtub and asking absolutely no questions.

We respect that kind of confidence.

The ReStore is full of furniture, fixtures and several items that appear to have arrived with very specific plans for your house. Some are practical. Some are beautiful. One chair looks prepared to hear your side of the story and then rule against you.

Bring measurements, clear the trunk and maintain plausible deniability about how much furniture you already own.

Labor Day is about the people behind the work.

Women Build Progress Report

Remember when this was just a groundbreaking, a pile of lumber, and a suspicious amount of optimism?

Well.

We have walls now.

Actual walls.

The Women Build house has gone from “trust us, it’s going to be a house” to “okay, we can definitely see it.”

The exterior walls are up, sheathing is going on, and every week this thing looks a little more like the home it’s supposed to become.

We are still looking for the right person to join the Newport ReStore team.

Not the person who likes the idea of a warehouse job.

The person who can actually do one.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position that involves receiving donations, moving inventory, preparing merchandise for the sales floor, helping customers and donors, and working with staff and volunteers to keep the back of the ReStore from turning into furniture Tetris.

You’ll be lifting and moving items up to 75 pounds, spending much of the day on your feet, and working both indoors and outside.

At least six months of related or transferable work experience is required. Warehouse, retail, donation-based, or similar experience is preferred. Applicants must also have a high school diploma or equivalent, valid ID, and be able to pass the required background checks.

What matters most is that you can show up, work hard, work well with other people, and handle a day that may involve a dresser, three recliners, a donation truck, and somebody asking where the lamps go.

Thinking about Habitat homeownership usually starts with one question.

Could this actually be an option for me?

That is exactly what Homeowners Orientation is there to help you figure out.

Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity is holding two free orientations in Jacksonville on September 15 and September 29 from 10 to 11 a.m. at NCWorks Career Center.

Our Homeownership Services Specialist, Jowita Zerilli, leads these orientations, and this is very much her wheelhouse. She knows the program, she knows the process, and she is remarkably good at explaining both without making anything feel more complicated than it needs to be.

She’ll walk through the Habitat homeownership program, eligibility requirements, the application process, sweat equity, and what comes next.

And if you have questions, bring them. If you are not even sure which questions you should be asking yet, that is fine too. Jowita can help with that part.

The orientations are open to Carteret and Onslow County residents, and there is no cost to attend.

That lettuce isn't dead. It's just being dramatic.

If your lettuce, kale, spinach, celery, carrots, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower or sturdy fresh herbs are looking a little limp, give them a cold soak in ice water for 10 to 30 minutes. A surprising amount of produce can crisp right back up.

Important distinction before anybody puts a questionable cucumber into intensive care: wilted is fine. Slimy, moldy, mushy or funky-smelling is over. Ice water can revive tired produce. It cannot reverse bad decisions.

And with grocery prices doing whatever fresh nonsense they’re doing, getting another meal out of something you already paid for absolutely counts.

Today is Julie’s birthday.

Julie is our Onslow Site Supervisor, which means she spends her days keeping construction moving, volunteers pointed in the right direction, and the inevitable job-site surprises from becoming full-blown plotlines.

By 4:30, we’re hoping the hard hat is off, the cake has appeared, and she gets to enjoy the rest of her birthday without a single urgent development.

Happy birthday, Julie. We hope it’s a good one.
