The biggest battle wasn't the heat... it was a crooked girder.

Five Women Build volunteers showed up ready to work, and by the end of the day they had logged 25 volunteer hours, installed floor joists, learned the magic of nail guns, crowned, cut, and notched lumber, put in blocking, and successfully convinced one particularly stubborn girder to straighten up and act right.

Was it hot? Absolutely.

Did that stop anyone? Not a chance.

The crew kept pushing through the heat, learning new skills, sharing plenty of laughs, and making real progress on a future home for a local family.

A huge thank you to today's volunteers for proving once again that a small crew can get a whole lot done when they show up ready to work.

Want to join the fun? No experience required, we can teach you how to use a nail gun. We can't guarantee the lumber will always cooperate, though.

Some volunteers need to know exactly what they'll be doing before they sign up.

Justin is not one of those volunteers.

He's worked on several Habitat homes, has become a regular on our modular and Women Build sites, and somehow keeps ending up wherever the work happens to be.

According to Justin, that usually means siding.

What stands out isn't that he knows how to do everything. It's that not knowing how to do something doesn't seem to bother him much.

As a mechanic in the Marine Corps, he's used to looking at a problem, figuring out how it works, and getting it handled. The same thing happens on the build site. If he knows how to do it, great. If he doesn't, he'll learn.

He's also one of those people who brings others along to volunteer, which is a pretty strong endorsement. It's one thing to give your own time. It's another thing to convince your friends to spend their Saturday working, too.

We're grateful for the work he's put in, the people he's brought with him, and his willingness to jump into whatever project is next.

This month, the Volunteer of the Month spotlight belongs to Justin.

Today is the final day for current green-tag merchandise at 60% off.

When we reopen Tuesday morning, the color rotation resets and green tags start over as our new arrival color.

If you've been waiting for the final markdown, you're looking at it.

Today's the last stop on the green-tag markdown train.

After that, the cycle starts all over again.

What in the ReStore do we have here?

We don't know.

That's why we're asking you.

At some point in human history, a person looked at a collection of seashells and thought:

"You know what this needs?

Mice."

Not one mouse.

Two mice.

On a tropical island.

With a palm tree.

And moss.

As though they have recently escaped the pressures of modern mouse society and are spending a quiet week in the Keys.

We have questions.

Did they build the island?

Did they inherit it?

Are they retired?

Are they running from something?

Is this a vacation destination or a sovereign nation?

Do they pay taxes?

Most importantly, why do they both look so comfortable?

Wrong answers only.

Explain the situation.

Doors and windows are different from most things in the ReStore.

A chair can come home and quietly become part of your life.

A door arrives with demands.

The moment you start looking at one, you're measuring things.

Then you're comparing things.

Then you're standing in a hallway wondering why the existing door has suddenly become unacceptable.

The windows aren't much better.

You glance at one.

Somehow the current window has become the problem.

At the moment, we have a large selection of both.

New ones.

Used ones.

Storm doors.

Sliding doors.

Interior doors.

Exterior doors.

Enough windows to make perfectly reasonable people stop what they're doing and begin evaluating their relationship with natural light.

Some are still in the box.

Some have stories.

All of them are capable of turning a quick errand into a home improvement decision.

We felt you should know.

The Wednesday Ladies were in the building yesterday.

If you've ever wondered how donations become merchandise, a lot of it looks like this.

Sorting.
Cleaning.
Pricing.

Finding places for things.
Finding better places for things.

Yesterday also involved moving framed artwork through a hallway that appears to be approximately the width of framed artwork.

Against all odds, everything survived.

By the time they head home, the holding shed is a little emptier, the sales floor is a little fuller, and a whole lot of work has quietly been crossed off the list.

They do it every week.

We're grateful for them, because a lot of what gets done around here gets done because they showed up and did it.

And yes, there's always room for more volunteers on their crew.

Our friends at the Newport Historical Museum - Newport NC are hosting a fundraiser at Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q, and 30% of the proceeds will go directly toward supporting the museum and its work preserving Newport's history.

If you've ever visited the museum, attended an event, or met the dedicated volunteers who keep local stories alive, you know how much heart goes into what they do.

So if you're looking for an easy dinner plan, grab some barbecue, support a great cause, and help a wonderful group of people continue sharing the history that makes our community special.

Good food. Local history. A win-win.

Today's forecast:

Furniture.

Increasing décor throughout the afternoon.

A large patio system remains parked over the property.

Expect scattered household items with periods of "where did that come from?"

Conditions are favorable for browsing.

A brief window of self-control is expected early in the day but should clear by lunchtime.

Open until 4.

Buying a home involves a surprising amount of information.

Some of it is useful.

Some of it sounds like a banker dropped a dictionary down a flight of stairs and told everyone to memorize the pieces.

If you've ever wondered how Habitat homeownership works, what the qualifications are, or whether it might be an option for your family, our next Homeowners Orientation is coming up June 23.

We'll explain the process, answer questions, and help separate the things you actually need to know from the things that somehow ended up on page 37 of the internet.

🕙 10 AM - 11 AM
📍 NCWorks Career Center
461 Western Blvd., Suite 106, Jacksonville, NC 28546

The patio department has entered a dangerous new phase.

It is no longer simply selling patio furniture.

It's selling extremely ambitious ideas about who your yard might become.

You walk out onto the yard looking for a table.

Twenty minutes later you're mentally installing a water feature.

Then a bird bath starts raising some interesting points.

The trellis implies you've always been the type of person who grows climbing roses.

You know that's not true.

The trellis knows it's not true.

But now everyone is curious to see how it plays out.

Next thing you know, you're considering pathways.

You've started referring to part of your yard as "the focal point."

There was no focal point this morning.

It was just a patch of dry grass.

Now you're one decorative owl away from drafting a master plan and researching ornamental grasses at 11:30 at night.

Three days from now you'll be standing in your backyard holding a shovel.

And you'll remember exactly where this all started.
