I don’t think every room needs to be bold, but every room should know where it is. This dining room sits inside a 1914 Craftsman on the National Register. The proportions were good and the architecture was there, but the room felt generic. We adjusted the scale of the furniture and lighting, then layered in enough color and pattern to make the room feel like it belonged to the house again. Swipe for before.

For our clients, this powder room was a chance to do something a little stronger than we might in a larger room. We wanted the space to feel memorable, but still connected to the rest of the house. Dark paper and matching trim make the room feel enveloping, and we kept the fixtures simple and classic so the room still felt right for the house.

Up now on Homes & Gardens is the outdoor area from our project. This space was designed to enjoy the best parts of summer: family, friends, and time spent close to nature.

The before was not charming. ➡️
But underneath the rental-unit updates and unfortunate decorating choices was a 19th-century home with real character. In partnership with NE Design + Construction we focused on bringing that character back into view and turning a worn-down house into a real home for the family who saw its potential.

The fireplace in this living room is one of my favorites. It’s original to the house and had been painted many times over the years. We loved the idea of bringing it back to its original wood finish, but stripping a surround like this is labor intensive, messy, and never guaranteed. You don’t always know what’s under the paint, and there’s a good chance pieces have been patched or repaired over time. Instead, we had it painted with a decorative finish that gives the effect of stained wood. I love working with artists who have this kind of skill. Their work makes a project feel more unique, more layered and more human.

On of my favorite transformations. Mudrooms are essential in New England. These hard working spaces are often open to the rest of the home, so we prefer them to be both pretty and functional. Swipe for before.

The dining room in our is central to the house and very visible from multiple sight lines. Our clients wanted a more casual space that could be used for both meals and work. We kept the space aligned with the Victorian architecture but made it more relaxed with less formal table and chairs and selected extremely durable materials that can perform in real life.

The key with trends is moderation. Here, the reeded vanity and marble shelf give the bath a fresh point of view, while the rest stays classic.

I like when the old parts of a house are allowed to stay old. In the entry of our project, we kept the stairs traditional and paired them with a classic woven wool runner. A custom cabinet turns a dead space into a focal point and adds function.
