One of my favorite things about old houses is figuring out what to do with the spaces that were never designed for the way we live now. We tucked a bench, hooks, shoe storage, and a shelf into this narrow spot beside the stairs, then gave it enough color to feel like part of the house.

This is one of my favorite rooms from our project, so I was especially happy to see it chosen as the lead image for the feature in the current issue of Boston Home. Our client has a wonderful art collection, and we designed this room around the painting on the left, a scene of tiled rooftops in Brazil. We’re so grateful to Jaci Conry Hogan, Jennifer Blaise Kramer and the whole Boston Home team for seeing what made this house special and sharing it so beautifully.

Old houses can handle new kitchens. They just need warmth, proportion, and a bit of character so the transition does not feel abrupt. The wood tones were especially important here because they connect back to the original woodwork in the rest of the house.

A living room at our project. This room was all about the ‘Re’s’ - reupholstering, reframing, rearranging, repurposing and refinishing. Our clients had some beautiful pieces that we updated with beautiful prints and patterns. We then added carefully selected lighting, accessories and finishes to pull it all together.

The old kitchen was dark and cramped, so more light was a top priority. But an all white kitchen would not have felt right for this client or this house. She lives with color and has a wonderful art collection, so the kitchen needed some of that personality too. The blue cabinetry, patterned shades, and warm wood fronts help the new space feel connected to the older rooms around it.

The dining room in our is central to the house and very visible from multiple sight lines. Our clients wanted a more casual space that could be used for both meals and work. We kept the space aligned with the Victorian architecture but made it more relaxed with less formal table and chairs and selected extremely durable materials that can perform in real life.
