Old Fort Niagara’s French & Indian War Encampment returns Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5. Join us for immersive living history featuring battle reenactments, guided tours, weapons demonstrations, and period artisans and merchants.

Come for a day or the whole weekend and see history come alive.

This weekend marks the beginning of Living History Saturdays!

From June 13 through September 5, the grounds of the Speaker’s House will come alive every Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm with engaging, hands-on demonstrations that bring 18th-century life into vivid focus.

Visitors can explore the daily experiences of Revolutionary War soldiers, witness traditional hearth cooking, and learn skilled crafts like tape weaving and wood turning. Additional demonstrations include historic laundry practices, trades of the period, and other immersive activities that reveal the rhythms of early American life.

Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply looking for a fun weekend outing, Living History Saturdays offer a dynamic and educational experience for all ages. Join us each week to discover the stories, skills, and traditions that shaped our nation.

Location: The Speaker’s House, 151 W. Main St. Trappe, PA. Parking is on-site.
Cost: included with general museum admission

This weekend!!

Step into the world of renowned folk artist Wilhelm Schimmel (1817–1890), whose hand-carved and painted animals, birds, and iconic eagles have become treasured works of American folk art. During the late 19th century, Schimmel traveled throughout Cumberland County, often exchanging his carvings for food and lodging while staying in local barns and homes.

Today, the Cumberland County Historical Society proudly holds one of the largest collections of Schimmel carvings in existence, including a remarkable large pine spread-wing eagle on display in the Schimmel section of the museum’s second floor.

Schimmel frequently stayed with the Greider family at their mill along the Conodoguinet Creek. That historic mill—now known as Heishman’s Mill—will host the Spirit of Schimmel Wood Carving Expo on Saturday, June 13. Don’t miss this celebration of local history, folk art, and craftsmanship!
