G. B. Davis Folk Art Come explore and learn!

I’m obsessed with learning and reviving traditional arts them - letterpress, woodworking, leather, carving and bookarts…

More importantly I bring folks together and build community through teaching and community projects.

Hand-carved birds, fish, and animals made with traditional edge tools from solid wood and finished with milk paint and other historic materials. Each piece reflects a lifelong study of wildlife, folk carving traditions, and the quiet poetry of handmade objects.

Since January, I’ve been fighting — tooth and nail — to be true to the mission of my studio and spend my time in my projects. It seems nearly impossible. It’s been a month since I’ve focused on a project that brings me joy. I spend my day surrounded by sketches and notes and plans for my work, while filling other peoples visions.

Moving forward, I’m no longer taking special projects or commissions. Just because I can do something doesn’t mean I should — and moving forward — or will.

My article is appearing - in two parts - in the summer and fall issues of Wildfowl Carving Magazine. The article has already been reprinted in book form available from the magazine.

💬"As a teacher, I’m a student first. I learn through risk-taking, experimenting, and working through failure. I failed a few times while preparing the project for this article. It took several attempts to get this owl right. At the beginning of every new attempt, I returned to my reference materials, started drawing, and pondered my techniques. I modified my patterns. I changed my approach. In the end, I produced a trio of barn owls that I find very satisfying. This is a win."

For the last week I’ve disappeared from most of the world as I immersed myself in the artist community . Professionally, the time spent at Snow Farm I spend at Snow Farm is the most rewarding of the year.
Being immersed in a community of student artists and master artists of such diverse disciplines is so empowering. All of my needs - food, shelter, time, space and all appointed studio space - are met. I’ve time to be in my head to be the teacher I want to be.
It’s absolutely exhausting. I drop into bed before it’s dark and am up and working early. Students have 24 hr. studio access and use it. Artist/instructors - empowered by their surroundings, their eager students and access to other enthusiastic teaching artists are working side-by-side modeling their processes at scale.
I’ve students that have been with me 2-3 years. They’ve become skilled and eager to experiment and learn new and advanced techniques and ever more complex projects.
This is the environment that artists - at all levels - need and crave. This week of time in my head (and 20ish hours of reflection while driving home) will change me and my practice.
I’ve realized the recent changes in life will allow me to jump from a mindset of creating to make an income back to creating what challenges me and fill my heart. In the end this is what matters and I suspect will create a stronger revenue stream in the end.

These stunning hand-lettered Peony buckets by Geoff Davis were originally humble hardware store finds—transformed into heirloom-worthy treasures using aging techniques and layers of rich paint.

Geoff created these antique-inspired florist buckets for the Indiana Peony Festival! His knack for crafting antique finishes is a true superpower. They were done in his signature style with OFMP, resulting in that perfectly crackled, timeworn surface we all adore.

The Indiana Peony Festival brings tens of thousands of folks to our neighborhood. For most of us in Old Town it’s a day of celebrating our amazing community as well as our state flower.
To celebrate this wonderful day,
I’m offering these great florist display buckets. I found these at a yard sale in the historic village of Zoar, Ohio many years ago. They’ve a great bright green surface, with the scrapes and marks of authentic use.
I’ve 5 available for $49 each (plus shipping).
Are you local? They’ll be in the shop window. Stop by or DM if interested.
