A new piece has joined our art hallway: a pencil-signed print by Virginia artist Ed Roebuck.
Roebuck was a nationally recognized artist based in Hampton Roads, known especially for his remarkably detailed graphite work. His drawings often transformed graphite into something almost photographic, using subtle shifts in tone, light and texture to give ordinary subjects an extraordinary presence.
Roebuck also holds an unusual place in Norfolk art history. In 1981, during a dispute involving works from one of his exhibitions, he famously entered the gallery and painted enormous black Xs across dozens of his own paintings rather than allow them to be sold at auction. The story made national news and became part of his artistic legacy.
This piece is a still life of nuts rendered in Roebuck’s characteristic monochromatic realism. The image bears Roebuck’s signature within the print and is separately signed by the artist in pencil.
Now hanging in the art hallway and available for purchase.
