Spring flowers are made in fall.

The tulips, narcissus, and ranunculus we wait for all winter go into the ground while most gardens are being put to bed. So do the hardy annuals that grow up around them.

This October, I’m inviting a small group of gardeners to join me for Garden to Vase: The Spring Garden, a four-session cut flower growing and floral design series in Norfolk.

We’ll begin with fall planting, return for bulbs, corms, winter sowing, and cold-weather care, then come back together in spring as our gardens wake up. That long stretch between November and March is part of the experience. The garden will be doing its work underground, and we’ll check in midwinter while we wait.

You’ll plant when I plant, and you’ll receive plugs, seeds, bulbs, corms, guides, and follow-up resources along the way. In our final session, we’ll design with an abundance of spring flowers.

No previous flower-growing experience is necessary. If you joined me for Summer Garden to Vase, this is the next chapter. If you didn’t, this is a good place to begin.

Summer Garden to Vase came to a close this weekend, and my heart is full.

Teaching has become one of my favorite parts of this work. Thank you to everyone who joined me this summer. You asked great questions, experimented, laughed, and made beautiful things.

Next, I’ll be joining T.J. McGrath - NJ Sustainable Luxury Florals & Education for a two-day Floral Design Masterclass at Harmony Harvest Farm | Fresh Cut Flowers + Bouquets , followed by the Dahlia Design Summit by Jennifer Gulizia | Oregon Cut Flower Farm & Garden Educator in September. I’m looking forward to both.

It’s the time of year when the field is covered in weeds and you begin to reassess your life choices.🤪

So naturally…I’m making more dahlias.

One of my favorite ways to multiply varieties I love is by taking dahlia cuttings. With a healthy stock plant and a little patience, one plant can become many, meaning even more blooms for next season.

Flower farming is funny like that. While this year’s garden is testing your resolve, you’re already investing in next year’s flowers.🤷🏾‍♀️

My first byline!

Slow Flowers Society | Local & Sustainable Flowers sent me to The RHS Chelsea Flower Show to write about the Flowers From the Farm display in the Great Pavilion, and my feature appears in the new Summer issue of Slow Flowers Journal.

Flowers from the Farm is a collective of British growers making the same case I make here in Norfolk: that local, seasonal, sustainably grown flowers are worth choosing.

Same argument, an ocean apart.

Standing in their display, I recognized so many of the flowers. Orlaya. Foxglove. Ranunculus. I grow most of them myself, on borrowed ground nearly four thousand miles away.

My grandmother Teresa grew their ancestors in St. Lucia from rose cuttings that arrived by ship from England. So much of why I do this work traces back to her. Seeing my name in print, telling the story of flowers and the people who grow them, feels like carrying that story forward.

Thank you to Slow Flowers Society for trusting me with my first byline, and to everyone who has encouraged me along the way.
