Located on a seven-acre canyon site strewn with oak trees, rock outcrops and boulders, this home for a family of four was conceived as an extension of the hillside and acts as a viaduct, allowing the driveway and existing service road to pass underneath.

Chu ¬ Gooding chose materials that would serve well in this High Fire Severity Zone, including concrete, concrete block, steel framing and metal cladding.

A final exploration of our "Fashioning Chinese Women" exhibition at LACMA, led by . Special thanks to Edel Legaspi at for organizing this private tour for AAPIDA members, and thanks to Sarah Martinez and Clarissa Esguerra at for making it possible.

Over the last few months, we've been fortunate enough to lead countless friends and colleagues through the exhibition. Seeing how others experience this show just proves that exhibitions are not a final product but a living thing, waiting for the next visitor to come along and discover it for the first time.

The project is a transformation of a 1950s three-bedroom tract house in the Hollywood Hills into a modern guest house and office. As part of this renovation and addition, Chu ¬ Gooding created connections and design responses to the surrounding landscape — and designed an interior environment with a material and color palette inspired by the canyon context.

This house for a three-generation family was designed as a dual courtyard plan to retain the old growth scenario of California Sycamores and Live Oaks within a tranquil canyon.

The approach allowed the outdoor experiences to be drawn into the interior realm, balancing the psychological pull between living in a man-made environment and dwelling in what would be considered a bucolic landscape in the Los Angeles metropolis.

Only 10 days left to see the “Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity” at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In this reel, Annie Chu explains the importance of color in this exhibition design and how it plays into the storytelling. Exhibit is open through October 12th.

The English House, a mid-century modern Wright-inflected masterpiece of rigorous architectural language, was designed by architect Harwell Hamilton Harris in 1950.

In 1998, Chu ¬ Gooding was engaged by the current homeowners to restore the house to its original integrity and Harris’s architectural intention while providing them with a program that responded to their contemporary and changing lifestyles.

Join Rick Gooding and the Chu Gooding team for an Artist Talk this upcoming Tuesday at the Henrybuilt Los Angeles Showroom. He will be discussing his SUBTERRANEA series on display (now comprised of over 120 drawings) and his well-documented fascination with the Eagle Draughting 314 pencil. ✏️

For those who weren’t able to attend the exhibition opening in July, this will be one of the last opportunities to see the Subterranea installation at Henrybuilt.
