Hereโ€™s a sourdough hack I use ALL the time! ๐Ÿ™Œ

After transferring your starter to a clean jar, feed it at a 1:3:3 ratio or higher, cover it, and let it sit on the counter until it PEAKS. THEN pop it in the fridge! ๐Ÿซ™โ„๏ธ

For the next 2โ€“3 days, you can pull starter straight from the fridge and add it directly to your recipes. No separate levain needed! ๐Ÿ™Œ One less step, less mess, and sourdough that fits real life. ๐ŸคŽ

๐Ÿ‘‡ Have you tried using your starter straight from the fridge, or do you make a levain every time?

10/16/2026

Has your fridge starter been neglected for 2+ weeks? ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ Donโ€™t panic if you pull some out to make a levain and it barely grows!

Sometimes your starter just needs a little wake-up call! ๐ŸคŽ Discard half, feed it again, and give it a couple of feedings to get back on track.

โœจ My tip: Add a little whole wheat flour to that first feeding to give your sleepy starter a boost!

Sourdough starters are more resilient than you think! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ‘‡ How long have you gone without feeding your fridge starter? Letโ€™s hear your longest stretch! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Keeping my sourdough starter happy doesnโ€™t have to be complicated! ๐Ÿ™Œ I feed Doughlene unbleached all-purpose flour and filtered water, and I ALWAYS transfer her to a fresh, clean jar when feeding. ๐Ÿซ™โœจ

Then you have two options: pop her straight into the fridge or let her peak first before refrigerating! Both can work, depending on your schedule. ๐ŸคŽ

Simple, flexible sourdough maintenance that fits real life!

๐Ÿ‘‡ Question: Do you put your starter straight into the fridge after feeding, or wait until it peaks?

10/14/2026

Once you have an active sourdough starter (whether you made it yourself or got it from a buddy ๐Ÿ˜‰), you can let it LIVE in the fridge! ๐Ÿ™Œ

I keep my starter, Doughlene, in the fridge and just pull from her to make levains for my recipes. When my base starter starts getting low? THATโ€™S when I feed her! ๐Ÿž Less maintenance, less stress, and sourdough that fits real life. ๐ŸคŽ

Question for you: Did you make your own starter or get one from a friend? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Maintaining a sourdough starter can feel SO intimidatingโ€ฆ and honestly, itโ€™s a big reason people never start (or give up)! ๐Ÿ˜…

After 2.5 years of sourdough baking, Iโ€™ve found a way to make it SO much easier and less stressful: LET YOUR STARTER LIVE IN THE FRIDGE! ๐Ÿ™Œ Less maintenance, more flexibility, and sourdough that fits YOUR schedule. ๐Ÿž

And thatโ€™s it! ๐ŸคŽ Your homemade vanilla is officially ready to brew!

For my batch, I ended up with 23 oz of vodka + 23 vanilla beans in the Titoโ€™s bottle. I poured the other 2 oz into a separate jar with the remaining 2 beans.

Give it a good shake, stash it somewhere cold + dark, and shake it about once a week for the next 3 months. ๐ŸŒฟ

Once itโ€™s ready, pour 3 oz into each 4 oz bottle, then divide up those beautiful vanilla beansโ€”about 6 halves per bottle (you may need to trim them a little!).

Add some cute twine and a label, and you have the easiest, most thoughtful homemade gift! ๐ŸŽโค๏ธ

How many vanilla beans do you actually need when making homemade vanilla? ๐Ÿค”

The easiest rule to remember is 1 vanilla bean per 1 ounce of vodka! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

For my 750ml bottle, that means 25 vanilla beans. I did have to pour a little vodka out into another container first to make room for all those beans!

I also show how I prep the beans:
๐ŸคŽ Slice each bean lengthwise down the middle to help release all that delicious vanilla flavor into the vodka.
๐ŸคŽ Cut the beans in half so theyโ€™re not too tall for the bottle.
๐ŸคŽ Add them to your vodka, give it a good shake, and let the magic happen!

Homemade vanilla really is that simpleโ€”and the hardest part is just waiting for it to brew! ๐Ÿ˜‚

If youโ€™re new to sourdough, seeing 1:1:1, 1:2:2, 1:5:5โ€ฆ can make you wonder, what the heck does that even mean?! ๐Ÿ˜‚

The good news? Once you know what each number stands for, ratios are actually SO simple.

Starter : Flour : Water

For example, if your recipe needs 100g of active starter and you want to feed at a 1:2:2 ratio:

20g starter + 40g flour + 40g water = 100g starter

That means your flour and water are each 2x the amount of starter.

Once you understand that formula, you can easily adjust your feeding based on how much starter you need. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Starter : Flour : Water.
Youโ€™ve got this! ๐ŸคŽ

Homemade vanilla is one of my favorite gifts to give because itโ€™s easy, thoughtful, useful, and actually gets used! ๐ŸคŽ

And if you want to give homemade vanilla for Christmas, early October is the perfect time to make it! It takes about 3 months to be ready to use, so starting now means itโ€™ll be ready just in time for gifting. ๐ŸŽ„

All you need is:
๐ŸคŽ 750ml bottle of Titoโ€™s 80-proof vodka
๐ŸคŽ Grade A Madagascar vanilla beans
๐ŸคŽ A little patience!

I also love bottling it up in cute amber jars and adding striped twine for a simple homemade gift. ๐ŸŽ

Love this season! ๐Ÿ‘ป๐ŸŽƒ

I was initially going to do just a webโ€ฆ buts whatโ€™s a web without a spider? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Iโ€™m obviously no artist- but I still love how it turned out ๐Ÿ˜
