Val’s magnificent handwoven jacket! Please read ⬇️

Posted • .knitting Here are a few photos of the jacket I made from my handwoven Icelandic yarn grown by two sheep who live . Archie is the senior sheep who produced the white yarn for the warp and Agust shared his first shearing to produce the weft. The jacket is part of an entry to challenge to produce a wearable outfit in one year. I was present for the shearing of the sheep, and the fleece was spun , a local fibre mill. I wove the fabric on a Kromski knitters loom with a 15” heddle yielding a 13” wide strip of cloth. Icelandic yarn is very sticky and required using a knitting needle to separate the sheds for each pass of the heddle. No items from outside the fibre shed were used other than thread and the magnetic fasteners for the jacket as the fabric drape would not support a sewn button hole. Deer antler buttons from within the fibre shed are an aesthetic addition. The handwoven fabric was used for its facing to be compliant with the fibreshed project rules. While it was a challenge to make enough fabric on such a little loom, I am pleased with the outcome and grateful to my friend and team member LeVerne who is the shepherdess that provides a soft landing for all the animals at her farm. She has made additional items for our fibreshed entry to be displayed

Days 23-25 I stitched my baselines and started stitching in the paper cord. Please excuse my imperfect stitches. I'm really enjoying this.

Day 12-22 - for the first time since my surgery I felt excited to make something. I took a Saeksilnubi class from through back in March but I never started the project. I actually ironed the fabric, drew baselines, cut the Korean mulberry paper, and started rolling the strips into cords. I’m excited to work on this a little every day. Hopefully I can finish by May 31.
