A w**e wall doesn’t have to be built in one finish. Some of the best-looking ones are built from two.
Pictured: InstaCellar, with our new Gold metal finish option. The gold works with the dark wood finish, so the wall reads warm and modern at the same time. If you’d rather go cooler, the same system comes in Silver and Matte Black.
Whichever finish you choose, the principle holds. Pick one finish to lead the room and one to support it. A wall built entirely from one material can end up looking flat. A wall with a body finish and an accent finish tends to look considered.

There's a new finish now available across the WRA collections: Gold, on our InstaCellar™, GrandCellar™ and Millesime cellars.

It lands at a good time. Warm metal tones — brass, bronze, and gold — have been the biggest shift in interior hardware and lighting over the past year, and a w**e wall is one more place where that finish choice is visible every day. Paired with acrylic, it reads warmer than the black or silver finishes already in the collection.

If you've noticed that the w**e rooms which photograph best almost always have a dark wall behind the bottles, that's not a coincidence. It comes down to contrast.
Most bottles are dark glass with pale labels, so against a white or light wall, they tend to blend into the room. Put the same collection against a deep, saturated wall color and it reads as a display rather than just storage.

There's a catch worth planning for: a dark wall changes what your lighting has to do. Without light aimed at the right spots, dark absorbs detail instead of framing it, so wallcolor and lighting really need to be planned together rather than one after the other.

Paint brands have already started naming their 2027 colors, and most of the early picks lean into deep, warm neutrals like olive and espresso tones — exactly the direction that works well behind a rack. If a statement wall has been on your list, this is a solid year to commit to one.

It's Vodka Day, which is a good excuse to answer a question we hear often from
people building one room for both w**e and spirits: does everything lie flat?
W**e does, and for a reason: lying on its side keeps the cork in contact with the w**e so it doesn't dry out and let air in. Spirits with a cork or screw closure are the opposite — stored standing up, because sitting in contact with high-proof alcohol for an extended period breaks down natural cork in a way w**e's lower alcohol content doesn't.
It's a small detail, and it's exactly the kind of thing that gets missed when a bar and a cellar get planned as one space instead of two related decisions with different rules.

Most w**e cellar planning starts with a number, how many bottles it needs to
hold. That's usually the wrong place to start.
The better starting point is the wall people actually see — the one visible from the stairs, the entryway, or the dining table. That wall decides more than it gets credit for. It points to a rack depth, a finish, and a lighting plan that all support the same view, instead of three separate choices made at different points in the project and forced together at the end.
Through October we're looking at the w**e wall as its own design decision, not something figured out after the bottle count is settled.

Harvest season tends to turn "I should really deal with my collection" into an actual plan. If that's been true for you this month, there's no better time to keep the momentum going.

Under a staircase is one of the most overlooked spaces in a home. This collector turned theirs into a glass-enclosed GrandCellar that holds 679 bottles.
Planning started with the collection, not the room. The final count covers 672 standard bottles and 7 magnums. The magnum storage was designed in from the beginning, and the 13.5-inch full-depth racking supports larger formats without overhang.
That's usually the real question behind "how big should my cellar be." It's less about how many bottles fit and more about what you collect and how you use it.

If a design consult has been on your list but you're not sure what to bring to it, here's the short version: rough measurements of your space, a general sense of what you're storing or plan to, and any must-haves like display or a specific finish.

You don't need a finished plan going in — that's what the conversation is for. Having a loose sense of those three things just makes it more useful from the start.

"Any dark closet works for storing w**e" is a myth we hear a lot, and it's only half right. Darkness helps, but temperature stability matters just as much. A closet that swings a lot between seasons can affect w**e over time, even without direct light hitting it.

If you're storing bottles for the long haul, consistency is the thing worth solving for first.

Compare your options.
