Panels have to be measured, fastened, and sealed precisely to handle the thermal expansion and contraction of our wide temperature swings. Flashing around chimneys, valleys, and skylights has to be exact, and snow guards have to be placed correctly. Get it wrong and a metal roof can leak or fail early, erasing the very longevity you paid for, and a mistake can void the manufacturer warranty. One worry stops a lot of people before they even look into metal roofing: won't it be deafening every time it rains or snows? Here is the reassuring truth. In a finished home, no. Modern metal roofs are installed over solid decking and underlayment, with attic insulation below, and all of that dampens sound. Most homeowners report no meaningful difference in noise compared to asphalt. The old image of a loud metal roof comes from bare metal laid over open framing, think a barn or a backyard shed, not a properly built residential system. So if noise was the thing holding you back, you can probably let it go. We answer the most common metal-roof questions here.

If ice dams and heavy snow load are the bane of your Buffalo winters, this is the part of the metal-roof conversation worth reading. Standing seam metal sheds snow far more readily than asphalt, because the surface is smooth and the panels run in one continuous line from ridge to eave. Less snow sitting up there means less weight, less melt-and-refreeze, and a lower risk of the ice dams that plague so many WNY homes. It will not eliminate ice dams on its own, attic insulation and ventilation still matter, but it gives you a real head start. One caveat: metal sheds snow in sudden sheets, so you need snow guards over walkways, doors, and the driveway. A good installer plans for that. More here.
