I love color, and texture, and patterns, and design, and how all of it can make us feel. While brown is a wonderful color, maybe some of our furniture has been brown long enough, ya? One weekend a year my girlfriends and I have gotten together to make art outdoors in the July sun. Over the past 25? 30? years I have painted, batiked, and experimented with all kinds of dyes, indigo recipes, painting styles, papers, fabrics, and techniques.

Having a group of colleagues to laugh and explore with is such a key to my growth as an artist. If you don’t already have such a group, I urge you to find one - start w just one person. Who do you know who also makes art, at about your level, and see if you want to get together for coffee and a little portable art making in a park. What have you got to lose?

Do you ever find yourself giving away something that is meant for yourself?

Writing up descriptions of the vintage clothing I sell on eBay (another love of mine besides making art), I found myself writing this about a flannel shirt ::

"LL Bean cozy flannel shirt with blue and teal / green plaid on white (with some bleach spots for extra down-home feel) and two front pockets

Very soft fabric makes this your favorite weekend shirt for chores, errands, hanging with your best friends. That first cup of coffee on the porch listening to the birds.

This is the kind of shirt that will remind you that you are not on the clock now, so no, you don't need to answer that work email, that work text, or that work phone call.

It's time for what you need :: water your plants, hydrate yourself, breathe, take a walk.

Because later you're gonna need energy to have that heartfelt conversation with your kid, be there for your sick parent, and check in on how your friend is doing after the thing.

So put on something soft and cozy, and remember it's all about love. Loving yourself first, so you can give to all of them from the overflow. Let the gentleness of this shirt remind you of how you want to be, that you're enough, that this moment is enough.

Yeah, to the world it's just a shirt. And it's a great shirt. But when you put it on, let it be your warm-hearted reminder, too."

~~~
That night I kept thinking about how great that sounded! And I realized, I really want that shirt.
But of course, it wouldn't fit me.
So today I tried it on ~ and it DOES fit me! And it is a VERY HAPPY gift to myself.
What gift are you giving to others that you might be cheating yourself out of?
I've shared my process and thoughts with folks on my email list since 2014. It's a reasonable size list, and I've personally talked with nearly everyone on it. ~ So it's a cozy list of people I consider real connections.
Today, someone unsubscribed - which of course is fine.
But here's the thing - they signed up for those emails in 2023, and have been opening those emails ever since - and today when they unsubbed, they marked it as spam.
Y'all.
Two years of emails, opening more than half of them, and deciding today, with 8 options for why you want out, and they tell the email provider that I spammed them?!!?
Sigh.
MailChimp knows who I am after 12 years, and nothing is going to happen to me because of this. But other artists may not have a solid history yet behind them. PLEASE be thoughtful when you unsubscribe. You can easily pick, Not interested, No longer meets my needs, or any of the others. Please don't casually damage good people's reputations!
Okay, jumping off my wee soap box now and going back out to keep sanding this gorgeous dresser I'm working on. Love y'all!!!
(and gosh yes, you can get my cozy emails if you want - fb doesn't like when I link to anywhere but here - so it's the name of this page plus the dot com wink wink)
Best plant nursery, in Tunbridge Vermont . As an artist, I see artistry in others, and these folx really do Vermont proud. I already can’t wait to go back. Spring Road Nursery specializes in unusual perennials, and they start everything there themselves from seed. You are in for a treat.
Friends, if your creative juices need a boost, and you’re open to some truly out of the box thinking, please may I introduce you to Kalu Putic
His specialty is trash fashion and he will blow your mind
Not suitable for “follow the rules” and “color inside the lines” friends - y’all skip this one 🥰
This is for my spicy juicy messy creative friends, cuz he will shake you up. A few pics here. Look him up on the TT, prob other places too. Make this your Artist’s Date 🎨
I yelled out loud at the one w the shoes, startling my dogs, “WHAT did you DO with those SHOES?!?!” 🤗 for like 5 mins in awe & admiration at his boundless creativity
(Struggling w your creativity? Here’s a trick I love. Look at an account like this of someone “successful”, but start w the oldest image. See how he didn’t have it all together yet? See how he just started, and it developed over time? Also I loved watching how his collection, behind him on that wall, grew w every post. That’s it! We do the work! We keep focused and building! You’ve got this!)
