Eight lighting cans in the ceiling of this media lounge were rattling every time the subwoofers kicked in, right around 60Hz, and it sounded like something in the speakers had come loose.
It hadn't.
We traced the buzz to the metal housings of the lighting cans themselves, vibrating in sympathy with the bass from the subwoofers.
The fix was straightforward once we found the source: a shim to stop the movement and fire-blocking caulk to damp the vibration inside each housing.
We applied the same treatment to all eight cans, and the problem was solved.
The Grimani Systems subwoofers in this room now deliver clean, controlled low end without a single rattle riding along on top of it. This is exactly the kind of detail that separates a system that sounds only OK from one that sounds great.
