TRUE STORY.
Every space has a heartbeat. You just have to slow down long enough to feel it.
I tell my clients this all the time when they buy a new home. Don’t rush to furnish every room. Don’t feel like every empty wall needs an answer immediately. Live there for a little while. Let the house show you who you are inside of it.
Pay attention to where everyone gathers without thinking about it. Where you drink your coffee. Where the light is incredible at four in the afternoon. Where the dog decides to curl up. The room you thought would be the center of everything that turns out not to be, and the little corner you never gave much thought to that becomes your favorite place in the house.
We’re so quick to want our homes finished. I get it. I love the furniture, the art, the wallpaper, the beautiful things as much as anyone. But after doing this for more than 25 years, I’ve learned that the really good stuff comes when you leave a little room for discovery.
A home feels different once life starts happening inside of it. You begin to understand what it needs, what you need from it, and what was never necessary in the first place.
That’s the part I’m always looking for when I design. The heartbeat that was there before I ever walked through the door.
Give me a little time in a house and I’ll find it.
