With Mother's Day approaching...
..and no less as we await the arrival of our baby girl and Yumi stepping into motherhood any day now, I hold a lot of conflicting feelings about this time of year.

On one hand, I want to celebrate my mother’s memory and honor Yumi’s new role as a mother, but on the other hand, I’m still deep in mourning. The joy of Mother's Day is tangled up with a sense of loss that hasn’t eased and I find myself resenting the cheer that often accompanies Mother's Day.

I wish I had learned to make all the Filipino dishes my mom used to cook. I wish I had asked her more about my father, about our family history, about how she and my dad built a life together. Now, as I prepare to become a parent myself, I realize how many questions I never got to ask and how many stories I’ll never get to hear.

That's why at Planterday, we aim to offer products that help hold space for both joy and grief. September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, a topic that hits close to home for us. Mental health issues have plagued my family ever since I was a kid. My father committed su***de a month before my 10th birthday which left a hole in our family that we never fully recovered from.

Many of you know how meaningful horticultural therapy has been for me and Yumi, plants are one of the few things that help me find solace in life and its hardships--whether it's indoor or outdoor gardening, engaging with plants gets me excited for each day and it's an honor to share them with you.

Thankfully there are many various forms of healing: through art, crafting, music and movement (just to name a few)! So we're partnering with and and awesome local artists and makers to bring you "Growing with Community," a FREE community healing event with hands-on workshops, community resources, fun raffles, music, nourishing food and beverages, and a few plants🌿

We also have an incredibly special surprise that we'll be announcing just before the event! 

We hope you can join us in building community where we can grow and heal together 💙

Today we had the greatest honor meeting & and got a guided tour of Kunzo's 6+ greenhouses here in Kawanishi, Japan 😁 These pictures cover a very small fraction of all of the incredible plants we got to see (we promise to share a video compilation soon!). We vividly recall saying it best earlier this summer: "Plant people are the best people," and today's visit reaffirmed that--Kunzo and Yoko welcomed us into their space with open arms and spent the whole day talking all things plant-related with us. Thank you Kunzo and Yoko for your hospitality, we can't wait to return!

We love to see the shop transform into a fun space full of celebration and laughter.
