INTRODUCTION: FLAX art & design, the Bay Area's oldest and well-loved retail art supply business, has been serving the creative community since 1938. Centrally located in Oakland is our flagship store, and along San Francisco's north side waterfront is our Fort Mason Center store. Whichever store you choose, as customers often say, FLAX is a "candy store for the creative". A family-owned business

headed by Howard Flax, who represents the third generation along with his brother Craig and their sister Leslie Flax Abel, FLAX has a long history supporting artists and the Bay Area arts community. HISTORY: In the Great Depression, Herman and Sylvia Flax lost virtually everything. Inspired by the success of Herman's brother Sam in New York, who got his start selling art supplies out of the trunk of his car to vacationers in the Catskill Mountains, Herman took his family west from New Jersey and in 1938 with $100, opened a small art supply store in downtown San Francisco. Initially the family lived in the store's backroom, but soon they rented an apartment and converted the free space into a custom framing department. Flax's Artist Materials was born and soon rose to success, buoyed by the artists' movement that grew during WWII. Herman's other two brothers also established independent art supply businesses in Los Angeles and Chicago, and the Flax art supply presence spread to Phoenix, Orlando and Atlanta. In 1955, Herman passed away at an early age, and upon returning from military service, Herman and Sylvia's youngest son Philip took over the San Francisco business alongside his brother Jerry. The SF-based Flax brothers grew close to their customers, becoming well-known for their generous support of struggling artists and the Bay Area arts scene. Their retail store soon drew nationwide attention for its incredible breadth of products, its helpful and knowledgeable staff, and its ability to inspire creativity through inventive presentation of merchandise. As the advent of desktop publishing forever changed the dynamics of the art supply industry in the 1980s, the company ventured into mail order to broaden its market. During this time Philip's three children joined the company, Craig, Howard and Leslie, beginning a period of more than twenty years when the four family members would work together to grow the company. Today
In its 80+ years, FLAX has become an icon of creative inspiration and a Bay Area institution. Staffed by artists, designers, and musicians, the stores are visited regularly by residents and tourists alike. From established professionals and serious students to weekend dabblers and hobbyists, at FLAX you can awaken your inner Picasso with tools, supplies and gifts for every artistic passion and all age levels. We invite you to come in and let your imagination soar.

Interested in Watercolor and Gouache? Join us for a fun and engaging conversation with Daniel Smith Brand Ambassador, Scott Stevenson. Have questions about Quinacridone pigments, where the color Serpentine comes from, or how the color Moonglow gets its name? Wonder how Daniel Smith tests their pigments for lightfastness? What’s granulation? This lecture/demo is a great opportunity to ask questions in a conversational and relaxed atmosphere.

In this hands-on lecture, we will learn about the colorful history of Daniel Smith manufacturing and the many aspects of developing their products. Scott will show us first hand lab paint-outs, some of the minerals used to manufacture colors in the PrimaTek line, and more. We will also take a look at a selection of Daniel Smith colors straight from the tube so you can see the Daniel Smith difference! Lastly, we will have a chance to swatch out some of these beautiful colors and create a very useful reference guide.

Special day-of discount, enjoy an extra 20% off our already discounted prices on all Daniel Smith paints.

Dear Oakland Artists and Valued Customers,

This is our final week in Oakland. Our last day with our doors open to you is this Saturday.

We’ve really enjoyed our time here, and there have been some good times! We hosted quite a few events, with Kidsfest, Pen Faire, the Print Fair, and our 80th and 85th anniversary celebrations. Over the years we’ve gotten to know so many of you, friendly faces who bring us a smile when you walk in the door. Helping you select products, knowing what creative projects you’re working on, discovering how the process worked out for you—that’s why we come to work. We’ll miss you!

But we still have this week. We’ve deepened our promotional pricing (see profile link). We must clear out everything, so when you come in you will see “free” signs on fixtures and miscellaneous store items. We hope these things find a good home.

Speaking of new homes, Manny has found one. Manny first came to be in 1991, part of our dramatic store front on Market Street in SF. Then Manny came to Oakland, installed inside, above our spray paint wall. Now Manny is with United Machine Works, a community collaborative Social Club & Maker Collective in Jack London Square. Here he is on day one, the background on open-mic night!

We also have a display pen cubby, custom made for merchandising Microns and so many other drawing pens, painted in a chromatic range by my parents in the 1960s. With great fortune, it gets a new home this weekend at a new art supply store opening in April, Diablo Valley Art Supply in Walnut Creek. Thank you, James.

This transition, consolidating our store operations into San Francisco, has been tough. It’s tough because of the deep, deep gratitude I feel for our Oakland team. They are amazing people. Everything we’ve done is built from their support, care and commitment.

Oakland, thank you. We hope you’ll make the trek across the bay and we can hang onto the relationships we so value.

Sincerely,
Howard Flax
