Between 1933-1945 in N**i Germany, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested as “homosexuals” ― 50,000 were officially sentenced, serving time in prisons.

An estimated 5,000 to 15,000 of those sentenced were incarcerated in concentration camps. It is unclear how many died in the concentration camps, but scholar Rüdiger Lautmann believes that the death rate of gay men may have been as high as 60%.

After the war, the treatment of Pink Triangle (gay men) prisoners in held in concentration camps went unacknowledged. Some were even re-arrested and imprisoned based on evidence found during the N**i occupation by the Allied-established Federal Republic of Germany.

Heinz Dörmer, an openly gay man, for example, served 20 years total, first in a N**i concentration camp and then in the prisons of the new Republic.

Shockingly, the N**i amendments to , which changed being gay from a minor offence into a felony, remained in place in both East and West Germany after the war for 24 more years.

Not until the 1980s did governments begin to acknowledge this travesty. It took until 2002 before the German government apologized to the gay community.

On August 3, 2011, Rudolf Brazda died aged 98;
he was the last known gay deportation survivor.
