Spring Reminder: Humidity & Hardwood Flooring
As spring arrives and humidity levels rise, it's important to remember that hardwood flooring is a natural product that reacts to changes in temperature and moisture.
For best results, hardwood should be installed in conditions between 30–50% relative humidity and 60°–75°F. One common misconception is that flooring only needs to sit in a home for a few days before installation. In reality, proper acclimation occurs when the flooring, subfloor, and home environment have all adjusted and stabilized together. This helps minimize the risk of issues such as:
*Cupping
*Gapping between boards
*Excessive expansion
*Warping or buckling
True acclimation happens when the flooring, subfloor, and indoor environment have all stabilized together.
As humidity increases this time of year, maintaining consistent indoor conditions before, during, and after installation can help ensure the long-term performance and beauty of your hardwood floors. A little attention to moisture management now can help prevent problems later.
