We would like to introduce Tom Lewis, our summer intern. Tom is a BFA student with a concentration in illustration from PennWest University, Edinboro. He has an interest in a wide range of art forms, including figure drawing, graphic design and traditional painting.

Tom is the president of PennWest’s Illustration Club, and is a student-member of Pittsburg Society of Illustrators. He has a strong interest in community engagement, and has plans to dedicate his time to helping his local community thrive.

Long time followers of ours will remember that, in Portland, we had a highly active internship program. Tom is our first student since moving to Pennsylvania 10 years ago! Please help us welcome him!

When selected for the internship, Tom Shared “I am excited to work with Barbara and CJ this summer for a plethora of reasons. I am excited to finally plunge into the business of art and get genuine experience with working artists. I also wish to engage in an art community that is close to me and one I feel comfortable stepping forward with. Overall, I am ecstatic to do what I love, learn, and connect with a community.”

History repeats itself in endless cycles. Once again we are in a rotation of "...the loss of a portion of true humanity." What was true in 1953, as pointed out in this article by architectural historian, Clay Lancaster [deceased], is true today. The pictured article was published by Patricia Poore in the 2026 Resource Guide of Arts & Crafts Homes and the Revival. The Bungalow illustration is by Rob Leanna. Let us, as a society, fall in love again with small, single family homes with quaint, dooryard gardens -- and seek the essential things in life!

James C. Hurley: 1932-2026

I have never known the world without my father being in it. Now I will.

There may be a little irony in it for me in that Dad passed in 2026 – the 250th year of the birth of our country. I say this, because one of my fondest childhood memories was in 1976 when I was 9 years old. My dad was a police officer. In celebration of our nation’s 200th anniversary, the Dutchess Country Sheriff’s Department created a celebratory police car. They chose my dad to represent the Department, and he had the honor of driving this special vehicle. I remember dad driving home with that car and parking it in our driveway! I thought it was the coolest car ever, and I was so proud that my dad was given the honor of being the custodian of it! I still am…

Many of you have asked, "When will you have a new winter scene card available for the holidays." We didn't have a new one last year. Be on the alert for a new one this fall, 2026. I just finished the drawing for "Early Winter," which is a fall scene showcasing early snowfall. This one hits home personally for those of us in Western Pennsylvania -- remember, this past year, it snowed on Halloween! I am looking forward to painting this one over the course of our upcoming warmer months!

In the process of considering frame styles for some of my new paintings, thoughts of this frame and this painting keep cropping up in my mind. I painted "Autumnal Equinox" back in 2008 for the "Falling Leaves" room set that Barbara & I designed together. It hung above the built-in bench of the room, and sold to an important client of ours at the Pasadena Heritage Arts & Crafts conference in Pasadena, CA.

Today's Work: Proofing colors for new puzzles of my work made by Pomegranate! For those of you who love puzzles and have been asking when we would have some new ones -- they are coming soon! This time around Pomegranate wanted to do two-sided puzzles. The new "Snowy Cabins" boxed set will feature 2, two-sided puzzles comprising 4 of my winter scenes. Keep an eye out for it!
